Hello there! Welcome to my CS: GO guide. This guide probably will not apply to veteran CS players, but I hope what I have to say will help anybody new to Counter Strike, or anybody hoping to hone their skills. Enjoy!

To start, here is your HUD (Heads-Up-Display).

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Pretty simple, really. In the top left corner of your HUD, is you map. Obviously, it displays the layout of the map, friendly positions, and when an enemy shoots, their position. What some people dont see though, is a "?". What is that question mark doing there, one might ask. Well that "?" is there when an enemy is sighted clearly, but does not fire. So the "?" is on the map showing the area in which the enemy was spotted, but not his actual position.

On the bottom left, your health is displayed on the left, and armor on the right.

On the bottom right, your ammunition is displayed.

On the top right, is the kill feed, displaying who kills who and in what way. In this case, the picture depicts one BOT killing another BOT with an M4.

Finally, one of the most useful tools in CS:GO. On the top of your screen, there is a chart with the gamer picture (Xbox) or Avatar (PC/PS3) of each individual player in the game. When one person dies, their picture becomes a skull , allowing quick identification of how many players you have left on your team, or how many enemies you are going up against.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Why is there a random picture of a knife on the screen? Its because of common knowledge. What would you run faster with in real life. An AK-47, or a knife. Apply that thinking to CS. Each weapon in CS has a distinct affect on your mobility. To check a weapons mobility, highlight it in the buy menu. The more the bar is filled, the quicker you'll move with said weapon. The knife allows you to move at the fastest pace possible in the game. Weapons like sniper rifles of LMG's slow your movement down significantly.

The gamemodes are split into 3 categories. Arms Race, which is gun game. Demolition, which is like classic, except instead of buying your own weapons, the game awards you weapons for getting a kill with the given weapon during a round. And Classic. Arms race and demolition are pretty self explanatory, so I will talk a little about Classic.

Classic modes in CS are divided into two categories. Defuse missions tasks you with planting a bomb as a terrorist, and defending the bomb sites as a Counter Terrorist. Hostage missions task the Terrorists with stopping the Counter Terrorists from evacing the captured hostages.

Defuse Mission: Terrorists are on offense in this game mode. You have one life, and you must use the buy menu to plan out your load out accordingly. This is a bomb:

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

The bomb is given to one Terrorist at the start of each round. The terrorist must bring it to either Bomb Site A or Bomb Site B. You will know how to get to each bomb site by the spray painted directions on the walls. You will know if you are in a bomb site if you are in the red area indicated on your map. The CT's must kill the Terrorists before they plant the bomb, and if the bomb is planted, defuse it at all costs. For the CT's, if you buy a defuse kit, it cuts the time for defuse from 10 seconds to 5 seconds. Doesnt sound like much, but when time is of the essence, every second counts.

Hostage Mission: Counter Terrorists are on the offensive this time. The CT's must eliminate the terrorists while trying to evacuate the hostages. There are FOUR hostages on each hostage map. Four hostage evac's equals a round win. All terrorists eliminated also equals a round win. These are hostages:

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

A CT can tell a hostage to follow him or stop following by pressing X (or the corresponding button for PC/PS3) Where the CT's spawn is the hostage evac zone. Get the hostages there, and you win. Be careful when shooting around hostages. If all hostages die by the hand of a CT, the round is awarded to the Terrorists. A hefty fine is placed on someone who injures a hostage, and an even steeper one is place on those who kill a hostage. You can lose all your money in a matter of seconds.

Now, on to one of the most important things in CS, the buy menu.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

The buy menu is where you will have access to purchase you weapons, gear, and grenades. The menu is divided into six categories, as shown in the picture. In each section of the menu, you can purchase different items. For example, your can purchase kevlar armor and a helmet in the "Gear" section, and a team-specific weapon like an AK or an M4 in the other sections. Pretty simple really. That's mainly an intro for the newcomers if they have never, ever seen anything in CS. Now onto some tips I can offer.

Now Im not a CS veteran. I played some of Source back in the day, but I really wasnt a PC guy. But Im in the top two hundred in GO, so I have some skill under my belt. Again, this is mostly common knowledge things, but those new to CS need some knoweledge of the game and it's mechanics. I hope you take some of what I can offer and apply it in game.

1) Strafing: Strafing is key in CS when in mid range combat. Strafing, for those who do not know, is the act of moving side to side. Moving while in a firefight in CS is very important. If you stand still for more then a few seconds, a good shot will headshot you, and you will die. When in a mid range fight, strafe. Move from left to right, stopping for a split second to get a shot off, and keep strafing. Why stop, you ask? Because your accuracy resets to the standard and your bullet will hit whatever you are aiming at.

2) Tapping/Bursting: Unless the person you are trying to shoot at is 3 inches away from you, you should not hold the trigger down and spray for any reason. Accuracy plays an integral role in CS. Someone taking the time to properly line up a headshot and tapping the trigger will beat anybody who tries to spray. With that being said, learn to burst your weapons and learn to control your trigger finger so you will only shoot one bullet at a time. Weapons like the AK/Famas/and Desert Eagle are all one shot headshot kills, so taking the time to properly line up your shot and kill the enemy quick is key.

3)Use the buddy system.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

CS is not about rogue gun play. Teams that call out frequently and allies that tag together will survive. There is nothing worse than turning a corner and seeing two people there, aiming straight at you. Having a friend with you doesnt just provide fire support and increased chances of survival. If it is two on one, and you are both together, if the enemy kills one of the two, the other can avenge his fallen friend, equaling a round win. Having a friend with you also can provide confidence. A room that you might have been hesitant to go in before now would feel like a breeze. Everything is better with an ally by your side to help you in any situation. Even if you are not playing with friends, just find somebody, and tag along with him/her.

4) Finally, crouching/crouch shooting. There are two reasons for crouching.

1) When you are just walking or running, your character makes noise. Very loud noise. When you are moving crouched, your character emits no noise what-so-ever, allowing you to move undetected and stealth like.

2) The most important reason to crouch: Dramatic increase in accuracy. When you crouch, your crosshairs become much smaller, allowing for pin-point accuracy. Using a weapon like an AK or even a Galil, its very easy to pull of one shot headshots while crouched. When in a fight, dont freak out and spray. Remember, slow down, aim for the head, and single shot your weapon, and crouch if necessary.

I hope to see some of you out there in GO. If you read this, please give me some feedback. Anything is appreciated. Thanks for your time. Peace.

Awesome help, dude! I have played CS for a few years but never really gotten the hang of it. I get trashed on CS:S for some reason. But GO has a lot better feel for me. I actually do a lot better than I used to. And this post is only going to help me more! Especially with the strafing and crouching. Can't tell you how many times i've gotten the drop on someone at mid range and they turn around and headshot me in a matter of nanoseconds.

If you want to play CS:GO or some other Steam games (I usually play tf2, l4d, etc), add me. My username is: mrgrowl.

Thanks again!

Glad you liked it. I too have been playing CS for a few years as well. Only Source though, and I was lucky if I did decent on that game. If I even tried to go on 1.6, it wouldnt even be fun. Like you said, GO fits me perfectly. It just has a feel that I like.
