Only games purchased through the Steam Client are viewed as Steam Games. However you can add non-steam games to the client/library by opening your Steam client and looking at the bottom left hand corner where it says "Add A Game". This will allow you to start up games from Steam as well as the ability to have the Steam overlay (in most cases) when playing said games. They are recognised as "Non-Steam Games" though.
