Well first of all I would suggest finding either a hoster, or grabbing an old computer, sticking large sticks of RAM into it, upgrading the specs and then using that to host the server on.

This totally depends on what type of server you wish to own, if you want to own a large public one I would suggest finding a server hoster like I am doing for my own server. If you want a small private one for you and your friends then I would suggest just running it off of your server of paying for Daddycheese.com (I think for 5 slots they're 2.89 a month, I think)

I do own a server myself, so if you need any help or suggestions feel free to ask me.

Little warning: Running a server us more stressful than you will think.

So I presume you want a public server? A 4GB of RAM laptop wouldn't be suggested to run a server on. I personally use Fragnet.net because they are quick with replying to posts, and I know them to be very dedicated to bringing me the best customer satisfaction.

So first question: Private for local friends, or a public server?

Well if you want a 24/7 I would recommend renting from a company, or leaving your computer running the server 24/7 which most people do not like doing... Plus it is not very good on your computer. Easy to add plugins and people can donate to your server on renting from a company. I rent DayZ from a company called HostAltitude, who also rents Minecraft. I recommend them a lot.
