Need a CPU upgrade and just wondering what one would be better. They are both compatible with my motherboard and within my budget.

I'd go for the x4 or the x6, lock it down to 4 cores then overclock

...What?

OP: "Hey, which of these two should I get?"

You: "Oh yeah, either of those!"

Get the 965 or the 955 if it's available for less. Hexacores are still pretty pointless and fewer faster cores are better. It'll overclock like a champ as well, unlike the locked hexacore.

Thanks for the help mate. One last thing would I need to purchase a new fan? Obviously new thermal paste but can I use the one I am using now with my AMD Anthlon x2 2.8GHz?
Thanks

I'd recommend it, especially if you're overclocking and actually stressing it. Stock cooling will be fine if you're not, and pretty much all coolers come with Thermal paste, either pre-applied or in a syringe. Just make sure you clean the old paste off! All of it!

The cheapest I'd go for a cooler would be the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ or Hyper 212 Evo. The next step would be the Thermalright True Spirit, then one of the monster dual-tower heatsinks.

Wow thanks for the help Was expecting the fans to be more expensive but apparently not. Will probably invest in a new one if I decide to overclock.
Thanks for the help. +REP to you sir
