Computer Engineering brofist.

One thing you'll notice is that a lot of people in CompSci and CompEng have Thinkpads. That's because they're the best laptops you can buy, in my opinion. They have the best laptop keyboards available, true IPS panels (Becoming a rare feature, unfortunately), incredible build quality, great cooling (silent even under load, it's actually ridiculous), user-serviceability, availability for lower prices (see their Outlet), battery life, features, software, and specs. They're just not made to be flashy or play games. Graphics are minimal to save power but some models do have workstation graphics which are not for gaming. They're meant to get work done and be what laptops should be. Another thing about Thinkpads is people tend to keep them around. I see people using Thinkpads that are far older than any other computers still in use.

This one sounds good for you.

The X220 is the ideal laptop to take to college if you ask me. Awesome battery life and performance in a small size. I find 15 inch laptops like my T500 to be cumbersome and I'm upgrading to an X230 Tablet when it comes out. I'm only getting the tablet because I like drawing and writing with a pen on occasion.

This one has a good i7, 8GB of RAM, an IPS panel (You HAVE to have the IPS option on these), an SSD, and a few other perks. I'd usually say buy this without the SSD or upgraded RAM and do it yourself because you'll get better parts and it will be cheaper, but this is a sweet deal. Have a look at what else there is, though. Stuff comes in and goes out really quick and I've seen insane deals like an X220T for 600 bucks with a good i5, IPS panel, and 4GB RAM. Keep in mind that these are refurbs, but they're very good. I would steer clear of scratch and dent ones though.

That's one of the worst decisions he could make in his position. He needs a real computer, not a toy.

Updated link for all the good Thinkpads in the Outlet organized from low to high price. The outlet was updated big time, so that link stopped working right after I posted it.

Awful Acer build quality and support, glossy display, not portable, crap keyboard and trackpad, bloatware everywhere, miserable battery life.

There's a lot more to a computer than specs.
