The two more cores the 1045 has makes a big difference in editing/rendering compared to a 4 core phenom 980. first of all higher clock speed doesn't mean its better, since both are 149.99$ and we put on a hyper 212 evo on both the phenom 1045 and 980 the 1045 will reach 3.5ghz easily and the phenom can get to 4.5ghz. The temperatures will be higher since the 980 is a 125watt, but the 1045 will still beat the 980 at rendering because alot of editing programs nowadays support up to 6 cores so the 1045 utilizes 6 cores so you get the best performance even though you will have a lower clock speed. The only reason why no one buys the 6 core cpu's for gaming because that no game will use more than 4 cores therefore its a waste buying a 6 core cpu.

i would pick the second one. it is probably going to be better because it has more watts.

 omg that is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

i5-2500k uses 95watts

fx 8150 uses 125watts and the i5 2500k kills the the fx 8150 in every benchmark pretty much and the new ivy bridge is supposed to use less watts that 95 and it will guarantee wreck any amd cpu no matter what the wattage is

..Well considering you're going to have to upgrade the MOBO whether you go with AMD or Intel, I don't see the point in going with AMD. The 2500k crushes every Bulldozer CPU on the market today. It doesn't consume as much power, highly overclockable, it's a true quad core, and you have a better upgrade path.

4.5ghz 2500k > 4.5ghz 8120.

Here's a 2500k smacking around a $50 more expensive 8150. Now just imagine what the results would be like once you OC....

This is what I said. AMD is truthfully just for gaming, the intel can handle more load.

Either way, AMD is more for budget builds and for gaming. Intel can support way more load, and just for a little more money you can get faster render times.

why would I need to upgrade my mobo? If you could explain it to me that'd be great, I'm more of a software guy than hardware. And what would you recommend for my current PC, I need a faster CPU, but don't really want to upgrade much more, as I only have so much money. Thanks for all these responses.
