Well you should be.

I know I should be.. but gaming is not the number 1 reason he uses his computer for. He will occasionally play minecraft and maybe a mmo or two, but he mostly uses it for web browsing and most of the time, multitasking.

Ok, first off you need to get an AMD processor if you want to stick with same MOBO (Most likely), and a new gpu would be good, too much ram and cpu on that thing will bottleneck. If you got a decent amd processor 2500k+, get 6gb of ram (enough for any games) and a 1gb gpu, and make sure the PSU has enough wattage to handle it all.

You should check ALL the installed components and make sure what you need and what you want.

The entire point of your point was that "he lags when he plays games". Now you change your mind?

The case, if it has bad airflow you should get a new one. Motherboard, some do not work as well with new generation processors, A new cooler. With you just getting an i7 and 8GB of RAM it will most likely bottlekneck.

Go on the Crucial website and download the motherboard scanner and it tells you what motherboard can handle and the socket
