does the x-clamp fix completely prevent RROD or just make it less likely?

It NOT permanent fix for RROD though. But it'll get the job done.

When it comes to fixing xboxes, there's three things that can be done.
1) x-clamp fix - Requires about $5 in parts and anyone can do it. Fixes rrod sometimes. Definitely a temporary fix.
2) Reflow - $300 in equipment. Chips are heated and solder beneath them is remelted to fix any bad connections. Fixes xboxes around 90% of the time. Considered a permanent fix
3) Reball - $3,000+ in equipment. Chips are heated, removed from motherboard, solder is removed from chips and motherboard, new fresh lead free solder is added to chips, and chips are resoldered to motherboard. This process will fix almost any xbox and when done properly will totally eliminate the chance of getting rrod ever again.
