Minecraft For Beginners

What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a java based game developed by gaming company Mojang, which was first started off by a man called Notch, a techy Swedish man with a love for games. If you want to read more about them, go here.

http://mojang.com/

Or watch the documentary.

The main objective of the game ( In singleplayer ) is to get materials, make a house, survive attacks from mobs, build amazing structures. The game is endless.

As you probably know the game is made of blocks, which gives it a very retro feel. Another cool and important thing to note is the the map is endless, yes endless, and is completely random, as you move throughout the world it gets bigger and different with you.

Note: This game has now finshed, but updates will still occur!

How do I play?

How do i &%$+&% Play this game?

At first Minecraft feels like it will take ages to get used to the controls, but after about an hour of playing it, you will be an expert.

Mouse
Left Click - Break blocks.
Right Click - Place blocks.
Wheel scroll - Switch through your hotbar.

Keyboard
W - Move Forward
A - Strafe left
S - Move Backward
D - Strafe right
SpaceBar - Jump
Left Shift - Sneak/Crouch
1-9 - Picks a certain item on the hotbar
E or I - Opens up your inventory
Q - Drops the item you are holding in your hand
F - Toggles fog, which is the render distance
T - Chat, multiplayer only
Esc - Opens up the menu

Note: You can change the controls, if you find it easier! These are just the 'default controls!'

What do you do on minecraft?

Okay, you've started a new game, and your in a strange blocky world, like lego land. Now you want to find the nearest tree and hold down left click to break it into blocks which you can make things with. Press I to bring up your inventory. Drop the logs into the box at the top to convert them to planks. Then follow the instructions. Refer the the Minecraft Wiki, linked at the bottom of this section.

Logs > Planks > Crafting Bench > Tools

From there you make a house with the wood you have gathered. Keep in mind your in a race against time as you try to make a shelter before zombies chase you down at night.

Now you have a house, tools and thats all you need. But now you need coal! So make a pickaxe ( Refer to the wiki ) and go look stone, its a grey block. Mine it and you will get cobble stone. Now instead of using wood tools, use stone tools! Once you have some stone tools look for more stone, but this time it will have black specks in it, this is coal. Mine the coal and make some torches ( Again refer to MC wiki ). Now your set! You have a lit up house and tools. From here on its just you and the game, venture outside the areas you know, explore!

Use the Minecraft Wiki for reference on how to make these items

OMG A GIANT GREEN !@#$ TRIED TO KILL ME!?!
Yes, there are things that can kill you.

Skeletons: Very skeleton looking, duh! Shoot arrows from afar and drop feathers, bones and arrows. They can ride spiders as mounts, rarely happens.

Spiders: Extremely large spiders just like in harry potter. Will get close to you and bash you, can also climb walls. Drop feathers and string

Zombies:The walking dead, extremely slow and not very agile, easy to outsmart and also drop feathers and bones.

Creepers: Giant green guys with 4 blocks for legs, resemble the shape of a male genitalia. Bounce around and once close enough explode, destroying all the surrounding blocks, except obsidian. Drops sulfur.

Common Terms

These are common terms used in the Minecraft world. This will help for beginers because minecraft 'nerds' use these terms a lot!

Adminium - See "bedrock".

Alpha - The stage of development for Minecraft Survival before beta and after infdev.

Bedrock - An unbreakable block at the bottom of maps.

Beta - The current stage of development for Minecraft Survival, preceded by alpha.

Biome - An area of a certain climate. (very vague, see the question)

Cartograph(er) - A program made to view your survival game's map.

Indev - The stage of development for Minecraft Survival before infdev.

Infdev - The stage of development for Minecraft Survival before alpha and after indev.

MCmap Live - Used as a mac alternative to the cartograph. Thread here

Minecraft - A sandbox/adventure MMO created by Notch. (Did you really need that definition? )

Mob - A non-player "being". Such as a spider, skeleton or pig.

What is a mod?

Mods (short for modifications) are changes, additions, or deletions to Minecraft that alter the original gameplay. Mods that add new content to the original game are often called partial conversions, while mods that create an entirely new game are called total conversions, and mods that fix bugs are called unofficial patches.
Mods have become increasingly popular, and increasingly extravagant. Mods are becoming very in-depth and add whole new experiences and goals to the game. Mods can now entirely change the minecraft you thought you knew.
Mods for Minecraft can introduce an entirely new experience and increase the creativity in many different ways, and the Mojang team plans to add an official modding API that allows modders to more easily add content to the game.[1]
Most mods in Minecraft add content to the game to alter gameplay, change the creative feel, or give a player more options in how they interact with the Minecraft world. Some may be bigger expansions, such as the Aether Mod, that add a significant amount of new content to the game. Other mods take away content to create a simpler or more specific gameplay experience. Some mods, such as the Portal Mod, attempt to bring over another game's content, experience, and feel. And still other mods do more technical things such as adding or expanding more settings/options or optimizing the speed, graphics, or gameplay of the game. Server mods or plugins mainly give server admins more options and ease of use, and most mods for single-player have a server version that allows or optimizes the mod in multiplayer.
Ideally, the creator of a Minecraft Mod updates the mod whenever the game updates - bringing more content, bug fixes, or optimizations. Otherwise, the mod may not work with a new version. Many in the Minecraft community appreciate the additional experience and ease of use that come with mods, while others play "vanilla", the original game, with only the original content, and might view mod usage as cheating. While Minecraft mods are generally safe to install, one should exercise caution with mods to prevent crashes, deletion of game or save data, system instability, or potential malware infections from a bad link or the mod itself. There are many mods or plugins available to complement the original Minecraft game or give server admins more options and control over their servers.

A few Single Player Modifications:

[b]To Many Items:

(Also known as TMI)

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

Turn On/Off: Press the "o" key in the inventory screen. Your preference will be remembered separately for single- and multi-player.

Add items: Left-click on items in the right sidebar to add full stacks, or right-click to add one at a time.

Unlimited stacks/tools (single-player only): Shift-left-click on items in the right sidebar to add unlimited stacks OR unlimited-use tools or flint and steel. ModLoader is strongly recommended through not required. If you have ModLoader, the quantity will refresh continuously. Otherwise it will refresh when you open your inventory.

Trash (single-player only): Drop an item on the Trash to delete it permanently. Hold down shift while clicking the button, now named Delete All, to delete all items on the current inventory screen (including chests). Hold down shift while dropping an item on the Trash to delete all items of that type on the current inventory screen (including chests).

Save states (single-player only): Several slots are available for you to save your entire inventory and restore it later. (The "x" button next to a saved state will remove it.) This can be used to save your "real" inventory before editing, save a blank inventory to clear out everything you're holding, save a full inventory of materials, share inventories between characters, etc.

I will be updating this soon with more things!
