How to Record a Good Commentary!

Part 1: Background Check

For this part there are a variety of steps to knowing your background (area) and being aware of possible interruptions.

Step:1 Be sure that you will not be interrupted during a recording, the last thing your youtube viewers want to hear is a conversation between you and your mom about taking out the garbage. Also avoid eating or drinking. Most commentators refrain from this but a few still do. The only thing that should ever be drank during a commentary is maybe a bottled water to keep your voice from going scratchy.

Step:2 Make sure to be ready for anything that could happen, a dog could start barking across the street, etc. All of these are unnecessary things that could interrupt a recording. Of course you could crop them out but the commentary would appear more sloppy and un-cared for and will affect your view count.

Step:3 Make sure you are comfortable with your area, as in if you have a parent upstairs and you cannot speak a normal volume, your viewers will reflect that back to you in comments, and it is never a good thing. Be comfortable and flexible to your volume, talking in an emotionless tone will bring to difference between other commentators and you. Be the commentator that you want to be. If you think talking boring and dull could make a good comedy make sure you show it as a comedy.

Part 2: Hardware Check

Step 1: The quality of your videos is a very necessary tool needed to have a good audience base. A capture card is a must in all gaming-related videos, unless on a PC. The best capture card to purchase would definitly be a Hauppage HD PVR averaging at about two-hundred U.S. dollars. If you are looking for something a little cheaper I would go for the DAZZLE DVC 100 HD. Both of those can be found on [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] at a modest price.

Step 2: When you record a commentary, What is the most important tool needed?

(A) A Microphone
(B) A Toaster
(C) An Axe Hair and Body Wash Bottle
(D) A SOPA petition

If you selected (B) you may be suffering from a minor case of stupidity.

The correct answer is (A). A microphone. The only quality more important then your video quality is your sound quality. The best microphones for this (In my opinion of course) are the snowball microphones, these can also be found on Amazon.

Part 3: Finding a Verbal Plot

Step 1: When you are recording a commentary, there are many different things you could talk about, I have made a convenient list below.

Current Events
The Gameplay (LIVE)
Game Current Events
Strategies
Your Personal Events
Tutorials
Advice
And many more...

Step 2:

When you have selected your topic(s). Organize them into a plot for the course of your video. Make sure you have backup topics incase your current one runs dry early. When speaking on the topic, be sure to state a variety of the following...

Opinions
Facts
Thoughts
Examples
Sources
Other's opinions
Ask Viewers for their thoughts

Step 3:

Stay original for most of your commentary, try not to be like one of the other 5,000 commentaries on the topic, and always remember to keep it interactive. Ask viewers to submit questions or other things for you to answer on a following video. Keep them entertained and release a variety of videos to feed the hunger of all of your subsribers.

I hope this tutorial help you guys. Please leave a Reply and Thank the topic to keep it alive as well. I started this topic, at least to my knowledge, so please be kind enough to report other posts if they are stolen.
