I Run a server Called Hostile Craft and it dose cost a pretty penny. Hammachi servers are a piece of crap and if you try to run one it will lagg your computer so much YOU cant play minecraft well your server is up, and another down-fall is that the only time your hammachi server would be online is when your computer is up. and 9 out of 10 hammachi server barely can only handle 1 person before crashing or lagging out.
I get my hosting from MPserv, they host my server, and by host i mean they store all the memory i need in a computer warehouse. from there website i can manage all the files for my server. i have 4 gigs of ram on my server (100 people can be in it without lagg) for around $65 a month with ad-ons. Currently I've made the money i invested in it and another 80 dollars! that's right i invested 60 and now I've gotten back $140 more in my bank because hosting mine craft servers (not hammachi) are very profitable.
By the way, i have been hosting mine craft servers for a while. but i have been doing most of my work on my friends server as co-owner, because he didn't know how to run one. the money i have made comes from MY server though. i recently started up my server 6 days ago. Thats right $140 from 6 days of sitting on my computer =P.
But what im trying to say is that if you want to start up a minecraft server your going to need to follow these steps:
1). Ask yourself: Can you handle the responsibility it will take?
2). Ask yourself: Are you mature enough to do it?
3). Get the start up money on paypal or other online money transferring services.
4). Find a server host (You cand find server hosting [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
5). Set up your server once givin user and pass for a server consol
6). Set up plugins for your server to be Survival or Creative.
7). Advertise for people to join your server
8). Get a responsible/trustworthy Server Staff to administrate your server.
9). Set up donation Ranks for people to donate for Special privileges
10). Collect the donation money for next months donations and have fun!

That how i started my success and that's how you will too! its fun and you get money. There is nothing bad about that!
