This may look a little difficult, it's super easy, I just wanted to make this tutorial very detailed! And doing this is completely worth it! The results are amazing. This tutorial covers Chrome and Firefox.

If anyone needs help I can do this over TeamViewer for you!

Today I'll be showing you how to use a RAMDISK to make pages in Firefox and Chrome load up amazingly fast. Since your computer can access data in RAM faster than on a hard drive, moving cached data to RAM can improve your page load times. So let's get to it!

The method we'll be using today will allow you to also use your RAMDISK for other uses.

PART 1 - The RAMDISK

  1. Download Dataram RAMDISK ( [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] ) ( [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] )
  2. Install RAMDISK and launch the configuration utility
  3. Copy these settings to yours, except for one thing, 'Disk Size'. Depending on how much RAM you have available you'll want to choose different amounts. If you only have 2GB of RAM or less you'll want to choose 256MB or less (I wouldn't go lower than 128MB), and if you have more than that you can make the RAMDISK as large as you want. I'd suggest 512MB if you wan to have your caches on their, and still have room on it for other things later. Make you check the Unformatted box, because we'll want to format the RAMDISK in NTFS not FAT.

  4. On the 'Load and Save' tab you can choose to name the image whatever you want, and save it wherever you want. I suggest just using the default.

  5. Next start the RAMDISK, and then go to your start menu and type in 'Disk Management'

  6. Once there you'll notice and extra unformatted disk, now right click it and select 'New Simple Volume...'

  7. Now you can click through the menus, it's ok to leave everything at it's default. The only thing I changed was the drive letter, and Volume label. But make sure you format it as an NTFS volume on this page:

  8. Now your RAMDISK is successfully created, you should have a new drive!
  9. I suggest making some folders on your RAMDISK like this:

PART 2 - The Browsers
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

  1. Type about:config into the address bar, accept the warning ("I'll be careful, I promise!")
  2. Right click > New > String

  3. Type browser.cache.disk.parent_directory into the box and press OK
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
  4. Type the path of your BrowserCache directory -- R:\BrowserCache\chrome (where 'R' might be another letter); press OK
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
  5. Restart the browser, and enjoy the new speeds!

  1. Close all open Chrome tabs and windows
  2. Right click your Chrome shortcut (the one you use to open the browser), select Properties
  3. In the Target window, move your cursor to the end of the path, after chrome.exe
  4. Type --disk-cache-dir="E:\BrowserCache" (it might be D: or F: or...) Make sure there is no trailing slash
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]
  5. Click ok and launch Chrome! Once again enjoy the wicked speeds!

I hope everyone enjoyed this tutorial!

I just was doing some testing, and it helps even more to install Firefox and Chrome onto the RAMDISK!

Did you assign the RAMDISK to E: or another letter? If you want help I'll be happy to TeamView you if you PM me.
