Local forecasters said the path of Irene was shifting westward, putting the city squarely on the wrong side of the storm and raising the prospect of 10-foot storm surges. By 1 a.m. ET the city's Central Park had already gotten two inches of rain, with much more expected.

The hurricane reached New York this morning as the mayor said it's now too late for people to leave.

Chaos ... vehicle avoids downed utility pole in North Carolina
Wall Steet is threatened with flooding and the city's transport system has been closed down.

The Hudson River has also started flooding into lower Manhattan, according to reports.

Already the storm has claimed 12 lives. The first victim was a man hit by a branch of a tree brought down in Nashville.

Two children, an 11-year-old boy in Virginia killed when a tree crashed into his home and a North Carolina child who died in a car crash at an intersection where traffic lights were out are among the dead.

In New York alone, 250,000 were told to evacuate. Those living in low-lying areas like Manhattan and Brooklyn had to be out by 5pm yesterday (10pm BST).

It was the first mandatory evacuation in New York's history.

Five New York-area airports Newark-Liberty, John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, Teterboro and Stewart have been closed to all arriving flights.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said: "We hope for the best but we prepare for the worst."

More than 90 emergency shelters have been opened in New York in preparation for the hurricane, which is the biggest to hit the city in decades.

Hurricane Irene: Vermont Flooding Kills Two, One Missing
Hurricane Irene is gone but Vermont is the latest state to deal with her fury as two people are dead and one is missing in the worst flooding the state has seen in 84 years.

The death toll for the country from Irene's three-day rampage up the coast now stands at 32.

Hurricane Irene's last gasp caused catastrophic flooding in the mountainous state, the worst deluge the state has endured since 1927. It washed away roads, homes, bridges and the state's emergency operations center.

The storm is also blamed for the deaths of two people and the disapperance of a third.

A young woman died Sunday in the town of Wilmington when her car was engulfed by the Deerfield River. A man believed to have been inspecting the water system in the town of Rutland was also killed, according Mark Bosma, a spokesman for Vermont's Emergency Operations Center. Another man who was also inspecting the water system is still missing.

All state offices are closed and the National Guard has deployed six rapid response teams.

"This event unfold much faster than anyone anticipated," Vermont National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Lloyd Goodrow said.

President Obama signed an emergency declaration for Vermont this morning.

:!: Hurricane Irene hammers Bahamas islands :!:
Hurricane Irene destroyed about 100 homes in the Bahamas as it roared over the island chain.

Irene, a category three storm, hit with winds of 185km/h (115mph).

Officials said some areas of the remote Acklins and Crooked Islands were badly damaged, although the capital, Nassau, was largely spared.

Irene also brought flooding and power cuts as it swept over Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the Turks and Caicos Islands over the past few days.

The Bahamian island of Mayaguana, where roughly 250 people live, about 40 homes were damaged, AP reported.

There were also reports of extensive damage on Cat Island, Long Island and Eleuthera.

Lovely Bay on Acklins Island in the southern Bahamas was badly hit, said the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema).

Nassau and New Providence Island were spared the worst of the storm
On its website, The Tribune newspaper said homes had "been completely washed away or have lost entire roofs, power lines have been downed and trees are blocking roads".

Crooked Island saw wind gusts of more than 160km/h, with a school's roof "completely blown off and its windows blow out", Nema reported.

Across the Bahamas, Irene toppled trees and brought some flooding.

But the storm's course shifted, sparing New Providence island, which is home to some 200,000 people.

For the last three or four major hurricanes that I can recall, we've managed to skirt the eye of the hurricane," Charlton Knowles, who runs a pizza restaurant in Nassau, told AP.

"If the only things we are having are downed trees and pickets fences, then it's just a severe storm and that's all."

Irene was heading towards the US, with its projected path well offshore of the east coast of central and northern Florida later on Thursday and early Friday, according to the NHC.

The hurricane is forecast to approach the coast of North Carolina, where US President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency, on Saturday.

:!: New York :!:
Hurricane Irene hit New York late Saturday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said as rain and stronger winds began to lash the city.

The edge of the hurricane is finally upon us, he told a press conference.
Bloomberg said that with mandatory evacuation orders handed to some 370,000 people in low-lying neighborhoods and public transport completely shut down, the time for evacuations is over.
At this point, if you havent evacuated, our suggestion is you stay where you are.

:!: NYCs Brooklyn, Tornado Warning's :!:
NEW YORK The National Weather Service says a tornado warning issued for the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens has expired, and a watch is in place.

The agency said radar had spotted rotating clouds in a severe thunderstorm approaching the area before 4 a.m. Sunday. The agency says the warning expired at 4:15 a.m. Sunday with a report of a toppled tree in the area but no immediate confirmation of any tornadoes.

Authorities had said that the approaching hurricane might spawn tornadoes. Irene is expected to make landfall in the New York City area at around 10 a.m.

A tornado watch remains in effect until 5 a.m. Sunday for New York City, Long Island and southern Connecticut. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form.

I just woke up in Brooklyn, New York. It's calm outside like nothing even happened, so I don't know if Irene actually hit my area or not.
