The Koss DJ100s are fairly portable, and I know someone who takes these to school with him every day. They're built well, sound awesome for the price, and fold up.

So would these work well with the kind of music I listen to?

Yes. I would usually recommend Grados for rock music, but they are not portable at all.

How much do you want to spend? I wouldn't spend much at all if you're getting a nicer pair of over-ears.

I wrote a pretty detailed post on page 67 about the Ultrasone Pro 750s. Take a look at it. They're awesome DJ cans, and should handle all of your music well. They won't compliment rock as well as neutral headphones or Grados would, but the DJ features make them one of the best choices.

Skull Candies are pretty good if you get them at a decent price. I got some pretty good ones for like 30 bucks, they are better than most headphones at that price range and they have a lot of bass.
