Need more info, at least a budget. When people say anything for a budget, I'll just go ahead and say my dream rig that costs upwards of $30,000. Electrostatic cans and amp, price-is-no-object DAC, thousands in cables, turntables, cartridges, etc. Fun stuff.

Ok Lol Lets Say $500 Canadian

OOOOOOH, fun! Let's get you something nice!

You have quite a few options at that price point. This will include a full setup, with a proper amplifier, DAC, and such. I do worry that your source is not quite up to quality, though, since rap, hip-hop, and pop are not the most well-mastered genres. You may want to listen from a computer with the first scenario I give. It will be a true hi-fi setup, with quality for all genres and sound quality is priority over everything else! It will be semi-portable, though, and the headphones will be best used in a good, quiet environment. Like I said, this is srsbsns hi-fi. This may not be for you, but definitely consider it an option. You won't be able to walk around with it easily and it will keep no noise out, or in, for that matter. It will, on the other hand, rock your world. Beats Pros will look like airline headphones in comparison, and it will use your full budget, if that's OK. I can always go lower!

Sennheiser HD 650 headphones:

These are high-end, and I'm even looking at these for my next upgrade. They do need to be amped and will not be driven well right out of your source. They'll sound great with everything, and you'll definitely need to have your music at 320 kbps MP3 at least if you want to get the most out of these. Tell me if you need help understanding audio codecs, I'm very knowledgeable there.

For an amplifier, look at the GoVibe Petite:
[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

This is an amplifier and a digital-analog-converter (DAC). Your computer, iPod, and anything that plays music files has both of these. The built-in ones are absolute garbage, though, and will hold these cans back! This will fix that. It powers the 650s nicely and is fairly small. It is portable and has rechargeable batteries. If you ever decide to upgrade (probably won't unless you get the audio bug), this can go with you. You don't need a new one, because this will power the new headphones. If you must listen from an iPod, you can use a line out connector like the Fiio L3 or L9 (Google) to bypass the crappy internal amp and use the Petite. It won't bypass the iPod's DAC, though, like you can with a USB port on a computer, so sound quality won't be as good from the iDevice.

I realize I stretched the budget a bit here, but there are ways of reducing it. You could look at the Sennheiser HD 600s, which are very nearly as good as the 650s. Some might not even detect a a difference. You could also go with an iBasso D2+, which will not power the cans as well, but will be adequate. It serves the same purpose as the Petite. If you need to go even cheaper, this next rig might be a better option.

This other option is portable. The headphones are closed so less sound enters and leaks, they fold up, and sound incredible. They also are more bass-centric than the other pair and won't sound as good. They serve different purposes, though and should fit your music pretty well. Again, these make all Beats look like a joke.

The Ultrasone Pro 750:

The iBasso D2+ or GoVibe Petite will suffice for an amp and DAC. They can be used with a line-out connector from an iDevice and as a "USB soundcard" from a computer.

If you want to use this exclusively with an iPod and save a bit of money, a Fiio E11 will be a good match. This is an amp only, and does not have a DAC. If you never listen from a computer, I'd recommend you get an amp only.

Tell me if you want other scenarios, like if you want in-ear headphones (IEMs), or even on-ear headphones. I can do that, and I'm happy to!

I can also recommend you headphones that do not need any special accessories like amps to use properly if you want a more simple setup. Even if you want headphones that will match or be better than the Beats for less, I can help!

Earphones could be on-ear or in-ear, so I guess I'll give recommendations for both!

If you want on-ear, the Koss Portapros are your best bet under 100 bucks. Other options are the Koss KSC75s and KSC35s. These are really cheap, but the sound quality is absolutely incredible for what you pay. I got a pair of Portapros for about 25 bucks. The price tends to fluctuate quite a bit. Also, they'll suit your music very well. They are good for a wide range of genres. If you're coming from Beats, expect to be blown away by how great these sound and how cheap they are!

For IEMs, you have a couple options. The Head-Direct RE0 (Re-zero) is a good option for a wide variety of music since they have a very neutral sound. The Hippo VB is good if you want bass emphasis (Both of these two are ~80 USD, tell me if you want links, Google = your friend). If you want cheaper IEMs, the Brainwavz M2 is a great choice and probably the best in the price range at around 50 bucks. The Meelectronics M6 is the same way but for the $25 range.

The Brainwavz M2 is probably the best you can get around that price, but it's probably a bit more than 50 now. Since this is the case, take a look at the Meelectronics line. I'd recommend the M6s, but take a look at some of the other models like the A151 BK. I'd recommend any of them! Great for the price.

Over-ear: Koss Portapro, KSC75, KSC35

In-ear: Meelectronics A151 BK, M6, Brainwavz M2

Over-ear: JVC HA RX700, Superlux HD 681 (roll off trebles with an equalizer a bit. They need it since they're a bit sharp, but sound good for the price otherwise.)
