SONY has pipped rivals to launch the UK's first 3D gaming system - on its PlayStation 3.

Owners of the consoles can download a free upgrade from today.

All new machines will have the technology built-in.

Four £23.99 games are being released for fans to take advantage of the breakthrough - Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD, Pain and a demo version of MotorStorm Pacific Drift.

Dozens more are poised to follow over the summer. But to experience the latest thrills, gamers will need to invest in a 3D TELLY - and wear 3D glasses.

Sony's Andrew House yesterday promised "an ever more compelling, realistic and immersive experience".

He hailed the technology as "a very exciting proposition for the future of home entertainment".

The move comes as Sony gets set to also launch a 3D laptop computer for games and movies.

A £550 3D digital camera hits shops later this year. But the electronics giant is facing competition from Wii-makers Nintendo.

The rival firm is tipped next week to unveil a 3D version of its DS handheld console - that does NOT need specs.
