Hey guys. Not sure if anyone has posted anything like this yet, couldn't find anything so I decided to make this post. I just wanted to mention that E3 officially began yesterday (at 2am here in Australia ) and that [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] is providing quality, add-free live streams of the entire event (including exclusive interviews).

Microsoft:

The Microsoft Press Conference was first up at 9.30 am. There were a number of announcements and there was a strong focus on content for Kinect. The following is a list of things that were announced and shown during the MS Conference:

- 'Minecraft' was announced as an Xbox Exclusive (Obviously still on PC but I'm assuming it means in the console-market).

- A number of Kinect games targeting children: 'Sesame Street's Once Upon a Monster' and 'Kinect Disneyland'.

- 'Gears of War 3' Campaign footage featuring Delta Squad on a ship being attacked by a gigantic Lambent Hydra-thing.

- The 'Halo: Combat Evolved - Anniversary' that everyone had been expecting. It features the exact same mechanics as the old game with a few minor tweaks and is fitted with the same graphics engine as Halo: Reach. It's features haven't been discussed in detail yet so it is still too early to know if Forge, Theatre, or Firefight are included but the developers have stated that it will likely be priced the same as Halo 3: ODST was (as an expansion). I'd like to add that 343 Industries has confirmed that there is an in-game command to change the player's view between the classic game and the new improved graphics, allowing comparison between the two.

- 'Fable: The Journey' was announced as a sequel set sometime after the events of Fable 3. The 'Darkness' has returned and the player's only mission is to escape the coming threat. It features on-rails style gameplay with the player using different hand gestures to use different spells. It allows the player to create their own spells by using certain gestures but seems to be limited in that it doesn't allow any of the freedoms of the other fable games (As it is strictly set 'On-rails').

- 'Mass Effect 3' - while not an Xbox exclusive in any way; was featured during the MS conference due to its implementation of Kinect features. Bioware has decided to make use of Kinect's voice recognition capabilities and implement them in-game to allow the player to pick dialogue options via speech. It also allows the player to direct squad-mates (theres 3 in ME3) into specific positions on the battlefield (previously done with left and right on the D-pad) and order companions to perform certain abilities on your selected target. This has been designed to increase the immersion of the player into Bioware's epic sci-fi universe but is in no way required for play.

- A new Kinect game created by the developers of 'Crysis', Crytek. It has been named 'RYSA' and is set a period during the reign of the Roman Empire. The game allows the player to fight against their opponents by using their right hand to swing a sword, left hand to shield incoming blows, and head and legs to headbutt and kick their enemies. It will be interesting to see where this game goes as far as gameplay is concerned as the trailer doesn't show whether or not it is 'on-rails' or the player character is moved using a different input.

- 'Star Wars: Kinect' was also announced today with some gameplay footage. The game needs some serious polish before release as even in the demo the lightsaber itself was unresponsive without the broadest and slowest of strokes. It is also set 'on-rails' with the player only really being able to choose which direction the character swings their lightsaber, which enemy to attack, and whether or not they want to flip over the enemy and surprise attack from behind.

- Lastly - and arguably more importantly; 'Halo 4' was announced as the direct sequel to 2007's Halo 3 and will continue the story of Cortana and Master-Chief through an entirely new trilogy. Not much has been released concerning the game but interviews with 343 Industries developer Frank O'Conner have revealed that the game has been in development for years and that it will be released sometime during the holidays of 2012.
Questions concerning the storyline, engine, and pricing have all been deflected with responses such as "If you've finished Halo 3 on legendary then you can probably guess where Master-Chief is" and "We're not talking about the engine right now but there is some interesting stuff that we're doing technologically".

I tried to keep my opinions out for this separate section and I appologise if they seem biased in any way (First time I've ever written anything like this really).

My Opinions:

- Overall the Microsoft Conference was good. Others will argue that there was far too much emphasis on Kinect only titles and not on games to appeal to the hardcore but I disagree. While I was disappointed with the lack of new exclusives I was extremely happy to see the announcement of not one but TWO halo games in a single event.

- I felt that Fable: The Journey was a huge step in the wrong direction for Lionheart. The demo seemed extremely lackluster and to be honest, boring. The demo showed a player guiding a horse down a linear path where he jumps off and proceeds to kill Hobbs one after the other with the game forcing the player along a linear path. I don't know if it is just me, but I find on-rails games extremely boring and repetitive. For a franchise that is all about the player's freedom to explore and do as they please; an on-rails game seems as if its just a huge mistake and frankly a milking of the franchise.

- In my opinion, Star Wars: Kinect was even worse than Fable: The Journey and is a true competitor for worst game of E3. The controls were unresponsive and clunky and really didn't offer anything other than a linear game where the player swings a lightsaber and enemies seemingly die before being thrown into the next wave.

- Minecraft on Xbox360 is an amazing partnership for Microsoft to have in my opinion. On PC the game feels a little like it takes itself too seriously, as an arcade game however, Minecraft will flourish. It is exactly the kind of game for the Xbox Live Marketplace.

- The addition of voice recognition in Mass Effect 3 is an extremely welcome addition. While I expected it to be gimmicky and a detriment to the game as a whole I'm quite impressed with how responsive and easy to use it was when shown. The dialogue selection will greatly increase immersion while not becoming boring or annoying (It isn't as if you need to speak a whole section of dialogue, you only need to speak 3 words or so) and the squad commands allows the player to easily order their companions to use certain abilities at certain times. Overall, Mass effect 3 is my most awaited game of e3 (being followed closely by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Assassin's Creed: Revelations).

Sony

I appologise for any Sony fans but I didn't really pay attention during their conference. here is some tidbits of information that stuck:

- Sony NGP was named the "Playstation Vita", 'Vita' translates to 'life' in Latin apparently which is meant to reflect Sony's new goals for the NGP in terms of daily use for entertainment.

- There were numerous trailers, interviews and footage of 'God of War: Origins', 'Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception' and 'Overstrike'.

- "CEO Jack Tretton showcased the 24-inch PlayStation-branded 3D display, whose tech allows two players to view the entire screen when playing cooperatively in the same room. Comes bundled with glasses, an HDMI cable, and a copy of Resistance 3. Will retail for $499 and is available this Fall." - Gametrailers.com.

I appologise again for having barely any info on Sony's conference.

Nintendo

I was not fortunate enough to be able to watch the Nintendo Press Conference live today. I am still catching up on the news but here is what I have so far:

- Unveiled 'Project Cafe'/'Wii 2' as being the next generation of Nintendo consoles. It's been named the 'Wii U' and features a unique controller that hosts dual analogue sticks, D-pad/XABY buttons and a large 6.2 inch touchscreen in the center (See below for a video concerning the specifications). The system allows the user to switch the output of the console on the fly between the TV and controller screen (meaning if someone wants to watch TV, you just click a button and can play it on the controller).

- Nintendo teased a ton of new games such features the old classics - Kirby, Mario, and Zelda.

- Ubisoft announced they will support the Wii U with titles such as Assassin's Creed, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon and a Rabbids game as well as TWO brand new IPs for the system.

- Darksiders 2 was announced to be available on Wii U.

- Batman - Arkham City was announced to be available on Wii U.

As am I. I know that Microsoft is just milking the franchise for everything they can but I'm interested to see how 343 Industries goes and what changes to the series are implemented.

I am disappointed however that the multiplayer for H:CE Anniversary is only on the Reach engine. I was looking forward to experiencing Halo 1 with online capabilities and now its really only a fancy map-pack for Halo: Reach (Not that thats too bad, I personally like Reach but am just disappointed because I was expecting something new :'( ).
