Hey guys.
Want to get 99 mage as fast as possible? Or do you want to make cash off it? Do you want to dish out damage? Or do you want to be a healer? Find out how!

Firstly. Magic is one of the anti-wealth skills. There are no longer any ways to make money off 99 except for one or two VERY SLOW methods. If you get 99 of either of those methods you will probably end up quitting or shooting yourself.

Therefore I recommend having A LOT of cash or nature runes if you plan on getting 99 in under 6 months.

Starting off, although this is probably not the case, your fresh off tutorial island. Where to start, and what you'll need.

Leveling!

Levels 1-11

If your just from tutorial island, kill goblins east of lumbridge. You can use the fence as a safespot. The runes from tutorial island should be sufficient to get you to level 2 or 3. When you run out, talk to the magic tutor slightly north of Lumbridge Castle for 30 more of each. After casting 30 more times you should be about 5 or more magic. Every half and hour you can get more runes from the tutor, but most people will just buy the runes. Keep casting Wind Strike until level 11.

Levels 11-19

Casting Weaken you got to cast this about 310 times to get to level 19. This varies (because mage you get experience for casting the spell, AND the damage you do, so you may have more experience from when you were casting Wind Strike).

Levels 19-39

Recommended Method

Get an Earth Staff and a bunch of body runes and water runes (roughly 2000 body and 4000 water). Find an NPC who cannot attack you (such as the Zamorak Monk trapped underneath the stairs in the Varrock Castle, or the Lesser Demon in the wizard tower). Cast curse until level 39. Note: This takes a TON of concentration as you cannot autocast. This can be EXTREMELY boring. If you don't care about leveling quickly, or want a more fun method, use options B. or C.

19-39 Option B

Get yourself a fire staff and buy some air and mind runes. Cast Fire Strike on creatures. I recommend the Ardougne Zoo for P2P and the Port Sarim jail or Lesser Demon for F2P.

I stole the picture from my range guide

Levels 19-39 option C

Do the same thing as option B. but cast Wind Bolt instead of Fire Strike. At level 23 switch to water bolt. At level 29 switch to Earth Bolt. Finally at level 35 switch to Fire Bolt. This method is a lot more expensive that A or B, and A is faster (but this is only 19-39 so its pretty quick whichever method!) but if you hate having to click every time you want to cast or just hate curse, this method is the next best. This method is the best if your already a high(er) level and can afford to spare the cash for the chaos runes.

Levels 39-45 (39-55 for F2P): Crumbling Undeads

The spell Crumble Undead is great experience at this level. Obviously its only the fastest if you cast it on undeads.

Unfortunately, unless you have a void knight mace or a slayer's staff (55 slayer required). This will only take a few hours to get to 45 on P2P. Cast this on Experiments or Skeletons.

For F2P kill skeletons, there are some low leveled skeletons in the stronghold of security, or the basement outside draynor. The best place, however, is probably in the Varrock sewers. I have absolutely no idea how to map a dungeon so I'm swiping this image from Zybez .

If you are F2P you are going have a day or two of boring training, but take heart, this is easily the fastest way.
Easily.

Option B.

Warning. This option is VERY expensive compared to crumble undead. It is also a tiny bit slower but requires less concentration. Use the same method as 19-39 part c, except this time casting the "Blast" spells. You will have to cast crumble undead until level 41.

This option is better for F2P because they will end up having to cast Crumble Undead longer and its easier to get bored.

So, at 41, use wind blast, at 47, water blast, and at 53, Earth blast until 55. This method utilizes death runes so it'll cost you.

Levels 45-55 Members

Basically just cast Camelot Teleport over and over. Equip an air staff and then all you will need is laws. You will need to cast this almost 2000 times (if you are exactly level 45 and are going to exactly 55, you will need to cast it exactly 1895 times!).

If you can't afford the law runes, use Fast Free Laws! Fast Free Laws is a service in world 66 where you basically pay about 3000gp and get as many laws as you want, for free. As this is not a fast free laws guide, I will refer you to a guide as soon as I find one I like.

55-99 F2P

For the fastest experience possible your going to be High Alching until level 99. You will lose a lot of money off this and its going to be really boring.
Have fun!
(Or you could become a member, its only 5 bucks a month???)

55-75

Unfortunately, High Alching is probably the cheapest and best experience until 75. I have no idea how long it will take as I went 52-80 just a barrows (and lost tons of money but thats another story; don't try it you will be sorry) but I know its a long and boring haul.

If you don't want to lose any money, buy flax, yews, and nature runes and make all the flax into bow strings. Fletch all the yews into yew longs(u) and then string them. Then Alch them. This method sometimes makes you a few gp per alch and sometimes loses you money. Hard to predict due to the Grand Exchanges fluctuating prices.

If you always want to make money, you can do the old fashioned pick your own flax, cut yer own bows, craft yer own runes, and then fletch your bows, then alch them. VERY SLOW and you only make 731gp per longbow.

Tip for Alching. Always withdraw your items in notes. Drag the note into the number 17 slot (5th row, first slot on the left). When you click high alchemy your mouse will already be on the noted items, therefore a lot less moving of the mouse, which will end up saving you seconds per alch, which will eventually translate into (an) hour(s).

75-99 Magic

Pleased with your 75 magic? You've got a long way to go....

Magic is only coming into its own at 75. Its easy to quit before even getting to 75 and a lot easier to quit after 75. I will try and detail the best methods.

The-"Cheap"-Pretty-Fast-Pretty-Boring Method

Basically, your going to alch yew longs until 99. You lose about 95gp per alch, which is 9.5m per 100k alchs. You will have to cast High Alchemy 181, 908 times to get to 99. This is going to be very boring but will only end up costing $17, 281, 260 (17.2m). This is pretty cheap as far as 99 magic goes.

The EXTREMELY-EXPENSIVE-Very-Fast-Experience Method

First of all, do Desert Treasure. Get your Ancient Staff and switch to Ancients. Next head to Pest Control. Cast the highest multi-attack spell you can (either Burst or Barrage). Then use the Pest Points on magic experience. This method will cost you a large fortune but is probably the fastest way to 99. This method is the equivalent of Red Chinchompas
for ranged, except that this is invariably more expensive. I recommend the Battle Robes, and I will cover what they do later in the guide.

Fast-And-Moderately-Expensive Method

Buy a Mystic Mud Staff and buy yourself a lot of Soul Runes. Find yourself an NPC that can't fight back (like the Zamorak Mage under the stairs) and cast Enfeeble on it until 80 magic. At 80, switch to stun. Do this until 99, its expensive (30-70m, prices on soul runes fluctuate a LOT), but its faster than Alching. Very boring and requires a lot of concentration.

Wing It

You can also just on off train mage. Like cast Fire Wave for a bit, then use ancients, then alch, just combine everything so your not bored. This method is probably the most fun but depending on what you choose, can be cheap (kind of, 20m is probably the cheapest ) or moderately expensive (60m+).

I went 75-94 here then did Ice Barrage until 99. This cost me about 50m.

OH NOES! I DUZ NOT HAZ TAHT MUCH D011AORS!!!!111!

I'd love to say, "Don't Fret, there's another way!."

I really would.

I will.

"Don't Fret, there's another way!"

Firstly you will need the quest Lunar Diplomacy AND Dream Mentor. I know its a pain in the ass. Next buy a steam battlestaff. Now buy a LOT of attack potions(1). Drink all of these, and bank all the vials. Now buy as many Astral runes as you bought attack potions.
Withdraw 27 vials (other space is for astral runes) and cast humidify. Keep doing this until all your vials are filled with water. Sell the water filled vials. You just made a profit off magic.
If you want to do this faster just buy the vials instead of attack potions(1). You will still turn a profit, just not as large.

This is a shoot yourself method. It will take you a VERY LONG TIME. You will make A LOT of money though. Be prepared to cast humidify for a few months ("no lifing", over 6 months if you play under 2 hours a day). This is probably the only way to turn a profit on magic without making the materials needed yourself (i.e crafting your own runes).

Is there any way to be 99 Magic Fast and Cheap?

No.

Now, after a (or several) month(s) of VERY BORING or VERY EXPENSIVE work you should be proud of yourself. You just got:

99 MAGIC!!!!!!

Ok, the guide is only halfway done. I will now explain ways to make it easier, ways to PK, ways to be a healer, ways to beat the system. Keep reading....

The Battle Robes

These are your friend when casting combat spells. I mean it. Forget ahrims's. Forget infinity. Buy some Battle Robes. While wearing these they have a good chance to supply any chaos, blood, or death runes you need while casting. This can and WILL save you millions, especially if your using ancients.
Buy some. The only disadvantage is that they degrade completely every 6 hours of combat. An hour in Fist of Guthix will get you the necessary tokens to fix them and some free magic experience. So no big deal.

Ancient Magicks

Requirements: Desert Treasure

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

This pretty much sums up the Ancients stereotype (for lack of a better word).
However, while this outfit might be great for pking, the Battle Robes are much more useful for training, and even the mystic robes are more useful because they do not degrade or cost money to repair.

The ancient magicks are an ancient strand of magic used by Zaros and his followers. They are not only the most powerful form of magic, but they also host multi-attack spells.

The Ancient Magicks are comprised of Smoke, Shadow, Blood, and Ice spells. The spells are ordered in usefulness, and it is assumed JaGeX thought this too, because Smoke spells are the first spells you have access to, and Ice are the last. However, the only really useful ancient spells are the Blood Spells and the Ice Spells. The blood spells share 25% of the damage you hit to the opponent. Therefore, as blood barrage has a max hit of 29, the most HP you can receive is 7.25 Hits (So every 4 29's you will receive an extra Hitpoint, in the same way that you can receive 2.5 experience, one hit you will receive 2 experience, and the next 3 experience). As the spells are quick this is useful though.
However, it is the ice spells that are the most useful. Freezing your opponents in place is extremely useful, especially against players using melee.

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

When used in combination with the blood spells against a player using melee, the player can freeze his/her opponent, run a little ways away, use the blood spells to heal his/herself and then re-freeze them. This is VERY effective. I will talk more about this in the PvP section of the guide.

Lunar Spells

I love lunar mages. I really do. They are few and very far between (how many people like healing???) but they are very useful. Especially ones with Spell Swap. Again I will talk more about the uses of the Lunar Mage in the PvP section.

Range/Mage Hybrids

A popular kind of pure/pker, the range/mage hybrid can both kill enemy mages and take out melee players. Using the range skill, the player can also kill other rangers. For tips on how to raise your range level, check out my Ranging Guide.

As far as normal maging goes, that is the end of the guide. For some basic tips on Player Killing in the new PvP system, continue reading....

PvPing

This is really the only good use for magic. I mean sure, it has its uses in normal combat or noncombat, but you can accomplish almost everything combat-wise using much cheaper methods.

Lets Start.

Ancienting

100% Mage

Recommended: 80 or below combat: 70+ magic
90-100 combat: 80+ Magic
100-126 Combat: 90+ Magic (Recommended 94+)

Switch your magics to ancients. Buy some ahrims. Put on an amulet of magic (or glory, or fury), and some gloves (preferably those with magical qualities). If your under 94 magic, your going to be using Ice Burst. If your 94+ use Ice Barrage as 20 seconds is a lot more than 10. If your in a single combat zone and have 82+ magic but not 94, use Ice Blitz. Make sure you have an ancients staff equipped so you may autocast the spells.

Now, though obvious, head out and kill people. This is the most obvious and easy to learn of the techniques.

With Blood Spells

A bit more refined, you will use more runes, but you will also be a lot more self-sufficient and will have to bank less. Freeze, run, heal, and repeat.

Melee/Magic

Wear ahrims and a neitiznot helm. Also equip a melee weapon (Armadyl Godsword recommend, decent alternatives include: any other godsword, saradomin sword, or a dds.

This technique seems simple but if done incorrectly can get you killed. Your a mage. Your weak to pretty much everything. Your survivability comes in being able to restrict movement.

ON A MELEE OPPONENT (Very Important, trying it on a ranger will get you K0'ed) cast the highest level freezing spell you can. Run up and use your special attack. This is why I highly recommend Ags, you want to be able to dish as much damage out as possible in the second you are next to them. Bandos Godsword is second for the defense lowering special. As soon as you've done your attack, run away and re-freeze them. If you have another special run up and use it. Whatever happens, keep them frozen in place. If they get near you, hit them once, freeze them, run, and blood heal on them. This technique OWNS. The biggest disadvantage is if your pjed by an ags'er or a dds'er you stand subject to dying a lot easier (due to low armor bonuses).

Ranged Magic Hybrid

We're still on ancients. Pretty obvious, if they are melee, keep them away from you. If they're a ranger, switch to range and take them down. Take other mage's down with range as well.

Wear: Dark Bow and dragon arrows (mage short and rune arrows in inventory for basic damage, d bow for special), full void knight (rarely seen, but if you keep a range helm in your inventory and a mage helm equipped, you can switch to range when ranging and gain a 10% damage increase and vice versa). Minor things like gloves, and boots, are up to you. I recommend glory for your amulet as it is cheap with good offensive bonuses.

Now, go out and own!!

The Lunar Mage

WTF? In Pvp?

Yes.

Pure Magic

If your going pure mage, you should have 96+ magic and be in a clan. Now you can heal the rest of your clan, cast vengeance other on your teammates if they don't have it, and deflect damage from them. This is super useful; the largest problem nowadays is you cannot share loot. Therefore my clan takes turns being the lunar mage.

Melee/Magic

Taste Vengeance!

Known and loved..very useful. Besides vengeance the melee/lunar combo is useless. If your PvPing melee though, your spellbook should be set on lunar as you can do up to 75% of their damage back to them! Extremely useful against people like me (some of you call us ags noobs?).

No there is no range/lunar hybrid. Possible but useless.

Normal Magic in PvP

Basically useless....your max is 20 with fire wave, you will never get a KO.

The End...for now!

That's all I can think of at the moment; if you have anything you want me to add post below.
