No offense, but why ask someone out when they recently had a tragedy...?

Don't hit on her immediately. Take some time to get to know her. Talk until you feel comfortable with her. Once you get there, ask her out on a date. Something casual, just don't over do it. Maybe the movies, or skating?

try to move closer gradgualy and start a small conversation like 'do you need a pencil?' and start to see about what she likes and relate to that.

also you need to give sympathy to her dad. feel sorry and show your sensitive side. make her feel better and that will create a bond with her to make her feel more comfortable with you
