Insurance can differ between companies and where you live etc. I found a MK5 for 2.5K on Gumtree.

Well, it obviously depends on what spec you get, you're not going to insure a GTI at your age but I have a friend who insured a 1.4 MK5 for a decent price. You may even be able to insure a 1.6.

Best bet is getting a MK4 golf though if you want it to work out cheaper, but go for whatever works out best.

Also, when going to insure use comparison websites. Try them all as they all come out at different prices and some have some extra things that you can tick to make the insurance cheaper. Listed the best ones below:

As I said before, it's not always about the engine size and speed of the car, go on eBay, look at some cars that you like and get quotes on them. The prices vary on a lot of different things, for example:

They're all the same car and model but they come in different specs, same engine size and year but they all have different power outputs. Just because one produces more power than the other doesn't necessarily mean that it will be more to insure. I got my car at 18 and insured it for the same price of what everyone else my age was insuring 1.2s for.

Should mention that I had a 1.6 MK4 Golf at 17 and they're lovely cars. Just make sure they've been looked after.

I pay $125 a month for my insurance, I got the car for $5500. I'm 19 now with no accidents, tickets or violations.

I'd go against a newer Fiesta, But that's cause where I live it's the car that literally every 17/18/19 year old has. Personally I'd go with something like a Honda Type-S. Although it's a 1.6 it's relatively cheap to insure and adding a named driver will bring that price down a little more too. You'll be able to find a relatively clean Type-S with 75-90K miles between 2000-3500. You could even look at how much the insurance is going to cost and then see what that would leave you with and pick up a cleaner example or one with slightly lower mileage. I'm pretty sure there's also a 1.4 variation of the Type-S or "Sport" Worth noting that the 1.6 Type-S also has 108HP which is definitely more than what you'd get with the likes of a 1.25 Zetec Fiesta or Corsa C / D.
