Hello I just bought a Hp Pavilion Notebook 15-au010wm. I already have a really nice desktop that I built a couple years ago so I just wanted something CHEAP and portable lol. This was cheap. It came with an i7 which is okay but I think I have been spoiled with my fast desktop... I would like to install an SSD but have never dealt with laptops before. I have seen some things that replace the disk drive? I would be 1000% fine with doing this if anyone can point me in the right direction. I just have no idea what to search or if this laptop is even capable..

Also, is it possible to get like a external SSD? I see them on some websites but is it any good?

I'd really hate to just start taking it apart to look at the inside on the first day and break it lol

EDIT: I think I'd rather just go with a external SSD as long as I can put like.. EVERYTHING on it including the OS.. Id just like duct tape it to the back of the laptop lol..

With that hp it is not hard at all to take the bottom off. this will allow access to the ram and the hard drive.
To take apart its to remove all screws on the bottom, even the too that are hidden under little stickers. fro there get a thin but strong gitar pick or blunt knife (yes i know it sounds scary but it can be easier and you cant damage it if its blunt) work around and the bottom will pop off, ifixit will have a full tutorial, i use them and have even made these tuts myself.

To install the ssd you just plug it in replacing the hdd and with a usb of uefi installation of your choice of windows boot up. If you know how to install windows the rest of the process is the same.

uefi - this is a updated version of a bios, they use to be a legacy format which was a plain layout.

you can not install uefi onto a legacy bios, it will technically install but will not post upon the restart as its not identifiable.

When you turn it on, press esc a lot fast. you will become welcome to a black screen with 7 lines of text, f10 will load the bios or f9 (its been a while but usually the same keys) upon the boot section it will ether mention uefi or not, simply if uefi is not mentioned it is not supported but this case it very well should be if its a new unit.

Additionally the ssd will be a huge improvement. the hdd is 5400rpm, desktops use 7200rpm as a minimum. The ssd will also be about 4x faster in loading files, using it externally will not be great at all and for a os? you may as well use the hdd thats already inside.

Can you help me? I know I can just google it .. but I want YOUR help lol. I finally got the balls to take it apart.. and thank god I did xD I feel like a kid in a candy shop again.. haven't felt this way since I built my desktop xD Im going to be purchasing the SSD any second now. I am also buying a HDD caddy for 8$. I will be putting the HDD in the Caddy and the SSD in OG spot. Now, I bought this laptop with everything already on it .. ( Operating system is all I care about ) Am I going to be able to just turn this Laptop on and go on about my life? Or what do I need to do after I install the new SSD?

EDIT: On top of this Later down the road lol could I even just simply buy a M.2? I have a slot for it lol I prolly wont but its cool that I could do that lol

You could get an external ssd, but it would not be as fast as if you had installed it internally.

I do not know the exact numbers, but running the ssd through usb 3.0 is going to be slower than running it through sata.

I think that USB 3.0 speeds top off at around 5 gbps.
And SATA III speeds top off at around 6 gbps.

So it will not be much faster, but you should always go with the faster option if it is possible.

You can go on youtube and find a video about replacing a hdd with a ssd in a laptop. It should not be too difficult assuming that the laptop has a 2.5 inch hard drive. A ssd is normally 2.5 inches.

Also I was going to post on your topic about your steam download speeds but it got deleted.

So here is what I was going to say....

TheFakeMrSneaky wrote I pay for 30/Mbps and when I test the Internet Speed I get -

26.26 Mbps Download - 29.47 Mbps Upload

[ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

When I download games on steam I get 3.5 MB /s

I always thought that was really good from what I read a long time ago but I was looking it up yesterday when a friend was over and it actually seems kinda low..?

Now, my friend just sent me a picture of his while downloading a game and it is at 8.3 MB/s

Is thier a way to boost this? I've seen that you can switch your region your downloading from but that never really changed anything.. I'm plugged directly into the wall also.

Your friend most likely pays for much higher speeds. If you do the math, 8.3 * 8 = 66.4 megabits per second. He probably pays for around 75 megabits per second.

Most speed test are done in megabits per second. And steam download speeds are shown in megabytes per second.

There are 8 bits in a byte...

26.26 / 8 = 3.2825

So your steam download speeds are a little bit better than your speed test results.

There is not much more that you could do to improve these speeds. The only thing that you could really do is pay for faster speeds.

Here is a few things that could be done...

If possible use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.

Limit the amount of people that are using the internet.

Limit the amount of background apps that use a lot of data.

Thanks for the response haha. Yeah I deleted it cause I found that out. He does also pay for 60/mbs so it all made sense haha
