Not going to be doing much other than gaming, maybe the odd video editing and rendering but that's about it. Idk, I'm not in need of a massive upgrade, its just nice to have I guess.

Are you from the UK too then?

Yeah, an upgrade from a 4690k might not be a terrible choice for better multithreaded performance and potentially similar or slightly better gaming performance, we're just gonna have to wait for benchmarks at this point I guess. Yeah, I'm in the UK.

Imma wait for the other SKU releases and see what their benchmarks are too.

Yeah, I'm gonna keep preaching that 6 core for now because it looks seriously interesting to me. Once we see benchmarks from the 8C/16T parts we should have at least a rough idea of how the lower end parts should perform as well.

Thinking of it, how much would 8C/16T benefit me over a 6C/12T, for gaming and light video editing/rendering?

I'd just be spending more than needed and not even gaining the full potential of it.

Definitely going to put off purchasing parts for my PC until I see how Ryzen goes down - ordered an i7 6700k for $316 and it's supposed to be arriving at my house before the end of the day. I'm just going to return it ASAP or even hang onto and see how the prices of i7 6700k's go - could make a couple bucks on it maybe.

Yeah, that's what I mean, 6C/12T Ryzen should offer at least similar gaming performance to current gen Intel CPUs, which means you'll pretty much be able to play anything you want, and 6C/12T, assuming they're fast enough and the threads are being utilised properly, should be more than enough for light editing/rendering/encoding/compression, etc.

I've just noticed AM4 R7 CPUs are available for pre-order in the UK;

Pricing is pretty much the same as US, -10. £319, £389, and £489. Going off current exchange rates, that makes the lower end R7 1700 the same price here(in USD) as the R7 1700X is in the US. Unfortunate that we get shitty pricing compared to the US, but it's still decent, especially if you compare it to a current gen i7 which is about the same price.

Oh, and AM4 motherboards are popping up for pre-order as well;

Seems maybe a little on the higher end in some cases but pricing for AM4 motherboards doesn't appear too unreasonable.

If you return the 6700k, you'll need to return your motherboard if you've already purchased one. You're not going to be able to re-sell the chip for more than you paid, especially after Ryzen is available in stores. I imagine the 6700k is still going to offer better, or similar gaming performance to Ryzen chips, but Ryzen will be better in multithreaded tasks. The i7 is still going to handle editing/rendering, etc though, so it's by no means a bad CPU, and it should still do you fine. So, really it's up to you, either just go ahead with the 6700k system or return it and wait another week or 2 for Ryzen.

How much will the motherboards go for around £200? or more or less about the same as a z170 or more?

Time to start buying Ryzen shit..

Been waiting for this. The 1700 does catch my attention , but i may be going with the 1800x for the long run once benches are dropped. Depending on my total amount to spend at the time will result in which CPU. I would be better off waiting until VEGA drops as well, but i don't want to risk seeing the prices spike before then.

Not sure to go with a B350, or X370 for the motherboard right now.

Chipsets are going to be sort of different. There's really only 3 chipsets for Ryzen, A320, B350, and X370. There's also the A300 and X300 chipsets but those are for SFF, so the first 3 will be most popular.

A320 will be similar to H110 chipset motherboards or lower end B150/B250. B350 will probably be similar to higher end B150/B250 to low end Z170/Z270, and X370 will be like higher end Z170/Z270 boards. So, to be fair, it does look like pricing is about right in line with LGA1151 equivalent. Although LGA1151 motherboards with the older chipsets(B150, H170, Z170) have been getting slightly cheaper since Kaby Lake launched. What's really nice about the AM4 motherboards though, is that those B350 boards should be fairly reasonably priced, and will allow overclocking, unlike lower end LGA1151 motherboards.

I get what your saying bro Gonna have to start saving and see what the benchmarks are like
Atleast prices will start to drop since Ryzen is being released
