As all of us know, HDMI 2.0 brings 2 great additions: 4K and HDR.

Except you can't use those features together with 60FPS.

4k at 60FPS - 30b/pixel gives you almost exactly 15 Gbit/s required. Great, this is below HDMI 2.0 specs, right? That one hits 18Gbit/s. Fine, eh. Except it doesn't. The stupid thing has 8/10 encoding, which means we have only 14.4Gbit/s bandwidth without overhead.

So, the only way this works is at 50Hz or lower or by using 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 color compression.

Chroma subsampling isnt a major issue for game consoles or movies as much as it is an issue for PCs, particularly with regards to text, either white on black or black on white. You see a subtle halo like colour shift effect around text with a less than 4:4:4 Chroma setup.

Whether this is an issue depends on application. In most media related cases, 4:4:4 is unnecessary. You gain little from having it unless you choose to plant your face on the screen or pause the video at every frame.
