Football and soccer. I'm American so of course that's my preference, but here's why.

So soccer, though was played much before this, was originally invented in England in the mid 19th century. They called it football not because you were primarily only able to touch the ball with your feet, but because you played on your feet as opposed to horseback.

We like things to make sense, right? A ball used in the game basket ball is called a basket ball. A ball used in the game baseball is a baseball. A ball used in the game soccer is a soccer ball. A ball used in the game pinball is a pinball, so on and so forth. A football was originally 12 inches, or 1 foot. I assume since it was a foot long ball, we just called it a football and named the game after the ball, football.

Also it's all your fault (British people). According to my Googling skills, the word soccer, is believed to have originated in Britain some 200 years ago. The rugby football game was shortened to rugger, a term recognized in British English to the present day, and the association football game was, plausibly, shortened to soccer.
