If you're running on lower specs then good games that can possibly time consume are Garry's Mod, Counter Strike Global Offensive, Terraria, and Mount and Blade. From that list the two biggest that are a personal favorite of mine are Garry's Mod and CS:GO. I've logged 2k+ hours on G-Mod and 250 on CS:GO and to this day still find them both to be very enjoyable, assuming the multiplayer scene is your thing. As for Terraria and Mount and Blade, theyre multiplayer as well, and especially with Terraria, you can spend hours doing things with friends, but they both also offer an awesome experience that is overall, time consuming and pretty addicting.

Now if you're running on pretty good specs then games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, GTA V(As I see mentioned frequently), Fallout 3 and NV, and even Payday 2 can be games that will have a big bang for what you spend. You may not spend thousands of hours on these, but reaching the hundreds and getting your money's worth of fun are pretty much guaranteed if these are you niche.

Been playing Heroes & Generals, which btw is a FREE fps title that goes back to just boots on ground gameplay... (Here's the catch though)
The game plays like you would think a real-feel shooter should play!
Yup, that means HELLA recoil, not that it's bad I really like this about the game..
many upgrades on guns, vehicles, (etc) and a ranking system of course. Give it a try brotha.

But in all serious I agree with Continuous on the fallout games. They are outstanding and a lot to do. One of my favorite games that kept me from being bored.

That game really dropped off because of false advertisement
