Hey people of the PC Forum,

I'm having an issue with Windows 10, the issue is that whenever I plug in my external hard drive, it doesn't recognise it, but the HDD sounds like it's working, things like trying to read data, etc.

I recently just updated to the anniversary update of Windows 10, could this cause anything like this?

Thanks,
Inclusive.

When mine did that it ended being a dead external hard drive. Will yours load stuff off it on another computer?

Unfortunately I don't have another PC to try the external hard drive on, but I use the external hard drive on my Xbox 360 so it runs on there fine.

Maybe try and boot it to safe mode, and go from their not really sure if you can restore it to the previous version or not. But also try and reinstall windows completely with a disc/bootable usb, and reformat the hdd, if the hdd is broke then this should work no matter what.

With HDD's if you plug one in while the pc is running. Unless you restart the system the HDD wont show up. Not sure if its the same with external hard drives. But give it a shot.

It could be that

But to me it sounds like it could be a USB problem or external hard drive wire problem

I read through reddit and looked up the error code people were getting, turns out its to do with the latest update I done, as the Partition Manager is showing it in RAW and not NTFS. So I may have to reinstall windows just to use the external or wait for Microsoft to release an update to fix this problem.

Thanks to all that have responded.
