Hi, i just purchased a PS3 online and i believe that its jailbroken. I did not know this at the time of purchase as it wasn't in the item's description, all i want to do is be able to play games online but it wont let me sign in to PSN at the moment due to it being jailbroken i think?
I just want to un-jailbreak the PS3 so i can play online like i would be able to with a standard PS3.
It is currently running on version 4.76. I have tried updating it to 4.8 via a USB stick but it does not work, it says the update file is corrupted and wont let me update via the software update part of the ps3 home screen menu. I Have also tried updating to 4.8 by using a USB and by using the safe mode method on the PS3, but when i try to do this, the PS3 says it cannot find any applicable updates on my USB stick.
Any help will be appreciated guys, cheers.
(NOTE: it doesnt give me the option to update via the internet even though i am connected.)
UPDATE: I have also tried factory resetting the PS3 but this didnt work either

If it is a jailbroken console, chances are it's console banned. So even if you where to "Un-jailbreak" it and update to the latest Firmware of 4.80. You wouldn't be able to sign in as the console is banned from the SEN servers. All I can recommend is you find out what Custom Firmware the console is running and then from there install the required homebrew in order to change the PS3s Console ID.

i dont really know enough about all of this to feel confident doing it, so if thats the case ill just return the item instead

If it's jailbroken, I think you need to downgrade to 3.55 firmware, then upgrade from that... but honestly, I would just keep it jailbroken... you can rent games and back them up and all kinds of stuff with a custom firmware... just look up MultiMAN and all the other homebrew you can run on a hacked one...
