I heard a story about this and then it reminded me of a film but i can't think of what the film is... it may even be a game or a TV show but I'm positive it is a film and I'm positive i have the facts right.
Theres a girl, possibly a boy too (her brother) and they thought their father had died or he ran away but really he had no other choice but to leave as it would save them. He went away and he is now the leader of an army or some form of successful group and one day, they finally meet again years later.
This could be wrong but I'm thinking the dad is a famous british actor, possibly liam neeson, sean bean, someone like that!
