Well, the 970 and 390 are going to perform pretty similarly so two 970's will pwn a single 390, in the vast majority of games. It's just nice to have the option of being able to add a 2nd GPU at some point.

Neither is better than the other.. They're both more suited to certain situations. The 970 is more efficient, but the 390 is better in some games. 390 will have better DX12 support, but AMD's recent driver caused a lot of people's cards to die. Like I said, between the 970 and 390, it's 6 or half a dozen. Which is why I'm saying just grab a 970 instead of the 390, because it won't cost any more and you'll have SLI support, so with the 970, you at least have the option of adding a 2nd card at some point.

They both outperform each other in different games. You can't crown a winner. All I can say is I have a 970 over locked to almost the performance of a 980, so you could get lucky with me. I went with 970 because of the lower power requirements and I have a mobo designed for SLI. I thought I'd never get a second card but it's next on my list and my builds only a few weeks old.

If you're planning on SLI, dont unless you are planning on buying a 1440p or 4k panel soon after. It would be a waste @ 1080p.

SLI is Nvidia's technology which allows you to run multiple GPUs in one system. It will give you increased performance, although some games may not play nice with SLI and can experience scaling issues and microstuttering.
