Normally if dogmeat returns anywhere its the Red Rocket garage near the starting village of Sanctuary, OR he will be around sanctuary look in back yards for dog houses he will be near one of them if hes around.

Other than that theres loads of Companions,

Danse for the Brotherhood of Steel,
Deacon from the Rail road,
Strong from the quest Cuirtan call i believe its called

As for your missing Dogmeat, same thing happened to me. Firstly I would recommend checking the entrance of the fort. Secondly try checking any dog houses you may have in Sanctuary (As he was their for me) If you don't find him then, travel to all of your settlements, he should be at one of them

An easy companion to get, if you haven't by now already, is Cait.

I believe, don't kill me if I'm wrong, you get the misc task fairly early in the game to clear out the 'Combat Zone' which is where Cait is located.

This companion is more for the evil sided players.
