Reuters wrote Physician-assisted suicide will become legal in California under a bill signed into law on Monday by Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, despite intense opposition from some religious and disability rights groups.

The law, based on a similar measure in Oregon, allows doctors to prescribe medication to end a patient's life if two doctors agree the person has only six months to live and is mentally competent.

In a rare statement accompanying the signing notice, Brown, a former Roman Catholic seminarian, said he closely considered arguments on both sides of the controversial measure, which makes California only the fifth U.S. state to legalize assisted suicide for terminally ill patients.

"I do not know what I would do if I were dying in prolonged and excruciating pain," Brown said. "I am certain, however, that it would be a comfort to be able to consider the options afforded by this bill. And I wouldn't deny that right to others."

The law, which goes into effect Jan. 1., makes it a felony to pressure anyone into requesting or taking assisted suicide drugs.

This should be legal in all developed countries, I wouldn't want to suffer through the last few months of my life if I were in that situation.

Wouldn't this create problems where people are forced to kill themselves? Some people attempt suicide and lots of them don't fully commit. Also people could force someone to kill themselves by force.

I wouldn't expect this to happen, even as the article said, there's a harsh punishment to persuade people to take the drugs. This is also only for terminally ill patients, if someone isn't terminally ill then they aren't even considered for the drugs so normal suicide attempts aren't taken into the equation.

That won't change? It's already happening. Everyday. Everywhere. However, I understand how you feel on it. If I were a 'vegtable' and a burden to those who cared for me, I would rather them put me out in a nice way than to have them wake up thinking 'Great. I get to take care of someone. AGAIN.'

Good. Can we also look into assisted-suicide for those that don't have a terminal illness? Keeping people in this world when they don't want to be here sounds pretty anti-freedom. Giving them a safer way (for others) to do it is also great.

You'd rather see these people writhe in agony for months before they die anyway?
