Hi, in about 6-8 months I will be looking at building a PC so am just doing some research now. I will be using it for both gaming (eg. Kerbal Space Program, X-Plane, FSX, Battlefield) and 3D rendering/video editing (eg. Cinema 4D, After Effects). I will be working with video up to 4k (at 30fps) and frame rates up to 240fps (at 720p) and everything in between (primarily 1080p 60fps). I will also be using photoshop but that isn't too demanding. My budget is 500GBP - I can stretch to 550GBP if it makes a significant difference but that really is my limit. I am hoping for it to last a good 3+ years before needing any upgrades if that's possible (yes, I am planning to upgrade in the future if that makes a difference to the original build). I would prefer an intel CPU over AMD. Storage wise, I am not too bothered about an SSD as the price would require a lower spec PC to fit my price range (maybe an SSHD but I don't have any personal experience to know if they're worth it) but I am looking for ~1tb storage for now.
Hope this is everything you need to know - I know there's is quite a lot of text but I have tried to be as detailed as I can to make it easier for everyone.

due to it being so far away, their is little point use doing a build as new hardware will come out and prices will change a lot.

Come back closer to the time of building and we can give you a solid build.

PC hardware changes so much in 6 months. We have Skylake coming soon and not to mention new GPU's [sort of] from AMD coming soon too.

I would also advise you to save up a tad more too. Maybe even £600. The more you spend, the better the build will be and the longer it should last.

Thanks, I was kind of expecting this sort of response - which is obviously reasonable. Without being too specific then, what sort of specs should I be looking at - eg. 4gb RAM? 8gb? Quad-core or other? i3? or i5? PSU rating?

Thanks again

At this moment the build i provided would be what you would be looking at for best performance for what you need it for, you'd want to add another 8GB of ram but thats easy to do

Prices can change drastically within a few months so we can't even tell you what might make sense in 6-8 months time. Plus, with a lot of new hardware apparently coming this year, it's not unlikely that you won't be using parts that have been released yet anyway. Come back here and post a thread when you're ready to buy, we'll be happy to help.

For rendering times an Intel CPU will most likely do better than a AMD.

My build was roughly £500-£540

Case: bitFenix comrade
CPU: I5 4690K
GPU: Nvidia GTX 760(comes with its own recording and live streaming software which is useful )

ram: 8GB

PSU: XFX 500W

HDD: 500GB(should of got a 1TB though)

tip:wouldn't recommend windows 8 as i keep running into problems and can't access alot of features

You suggest a gtx 760 and then say you don't recommend Windows 8 as you can't "access a lot of features"

Seriously?

Nothing wrong with a GTX 760 on a £500 PC build, every game i have played has had no problems and yes, windows 8 is broken, alot of people have problems with it and with most people alot of things don't work such as opening the settings etc. not just me
