Why don't you use codeacademy!

That's amazing.

Then pull it up on notepad++

Yea notepad++ is a pretty good well-built program, along with a text editor, you can format it to recognize code to different segments will be different colors so you get familiar with it and it'll change colors depending on how it's put together, and even alert you to where code isn't formatted properly. Happy coding

Codeacademy is good, but other than that I don't know what to tell you because I learned my coding languages in a high school class. But once you learn the basics its just practice.

By HTML and JS, are you going to be getting into Web Designing?
If so, don't ever use those 'drag-and-drop' programs. (ex. Dreamweaver or FrontPage)

Adobe has a Web Designing program called [ Register or Signin to view external links. ] that has a live preview. It's very useful when designing a website as you don't have to worry about refreshing the page all the time.
