I opened 500k before and the best player I got was Boateng it's all about luck, with a million coins you'd expect to get someone good though so best of luck if you do go ahead and spend that much on packs.

This year I've spent around 3.5mil on gold 7.5K packs, but around 700K on the 3.75K silver packs.

What have I got?
My best players have been 5 informs, 3 of which I never sold due to being so cheap, and two which went for a combined amount of about 500K. I have gotten Benzema, Tevez, Kroos, Hazard.
It's bullshit, but, I only spent about 50-60 for that, and that' about the price of 450 packs.
It's all luck, I don't even quick sell any more when I open packs. I have over 800 players in my club and a value of 120 mil. I'm just keeping them for a rainy day as I could quick sell them all for about 200K, so I've got that going for me which is nice.

It's a tough call to make if you want to spend money on packs or not. But, it depends. I spent over 300 on FIFA Points on FIFA 13 and had 2 teams worth about 150K each as the end of the year. I'd say spend something on a team and buy packs IF YOU WANT. It's fun opening packs but obviously can prove not too rewarding.
I bought 3mil to get ready for TOTY, I bought two teams, totally to around 650K, and brought my money down to 2.25mil after a couple more packs just so I can open 300 when TOTY is released.

Guess you could buy packs, send all to your club, then build around whoever you get, it's interesting and a little fun but coins are a pain to get.


TL;DR
Spend money on packs if you like the possibility and excitement of maybe packing something amazing.
If you don't want to risk it then build a team.
If you don't want to risk it all then buy a team and spend the rest on packs.
