Is the Radeon R9 290X the best for the price, which is roughly 300$ I am upgrading my PC for the first time ever. Is there anything cheaper that will perform better? I will not pay over 300$ since I am mainly a console player so this PC will not be my main resort for gaming. THANKS..

The 290x is definitely worth the money that you will spend on it man.

GTX 980>GTX 970>GTX 780Ti>R9 290X>R9 290>GTX 780>GTX 770

$300 is a very good price for a 290x since it's a high end GPU. It is only slightly out-performed by the 780Ti which is $450 or so. However, the GTX 970 out-performs the 780Ti and only costs around $340 so really, GTX 970 is the sweet spot for GPUs and if you can get one, do it. Otherwise, the 290x will be fine. Just make sure to not get a reference 290x as they get quite toasty and loud.
