Well I do computer programming (C++) and graphic design. You need to be good at something to make a profit. What I would start doing is, if you really know a programming language, is start selling some plugins. You could make a small profit if you began selling plugins (Say you know Lua, and you play Garry's Mod. Make, test, and sell some plugins and get a nice rep going). Being a developer means being interactive with everyone who communicates with you. Make sure to speak to everyone, that's how word spreads.
