NHL 15 Review (PS4)

The NHL franchise has spent many consecutive years stacking new gameplay modes on top of the classic variety of sticks, pucks and goals, but as it makes the leap to the new console generation this year; its gone back to the basics.

EA Sports has begun anew with the Ignite engine and new architecture, resulting in many of the graduated modes of play being rebuilt or even being completely vacant. So many are missing, in fact, that its actually quicker to list the modes that remain. It is safe to say that NHLs first year on the new console generation is in a rebuilding year.

Play Now and Versus Play represent the basic experience of jumping into the skates of any team from leagues across the World. Anyone thats played an NHL game in the last two decades will feel right at home here, but when it comes to the extended gameplay modes, the return to basics mentality becomes clear. Online Versus Play is head-to-head only, and Play Now features only generic games, without the facade of Winter Classics or Stanley Cup Playoffs games.

Only a few additional modes have returned, and almost all of them are missing some part of the progress that was made since their debuts in previous years. The popular Hockey Ultimate Team is a card-based gameplay mode which allows the player to assemble and manage a roster using player cards and various modifier cards. Points are earned at a respectable pace which can be spent on additional card packs, and the impatient players can opt to spend money to get card packs faster. Unfortunately, this mode is missing much of the prior installments progressive features, such as the ability to play offline seasons or even to play against a friend. Similarly, the rest of the mode feels largely unoptimized. Simple tasks such as applying contract time to an expired player used to be a button press away, but now reside buried in a menu tree that can quickly become frustrating after just a few renewals.

Be a GM offers the player a chance to manage their favorite NHL team from top-down, from managing contracts down to making coaching decisions and even playing as your team for up to 25 seasons, allowing players to establish a legacy of their own in the NHL. This mode resembles the infancy of GM Connected mode from prior installments. While the core experience of managing and leading a team is there, it lacks the refinements of which veteran players are accustomed, most prominently online play.

Be a Pro mode offers the opportunity to play season-by-season as part of a team through the career of a skater or goalie. This mode suffers from the rebuilding effect as well, as the ability to simulate to the next shift for skaters is missing entirely, resulting in a type of play resembling the modes debut a few years back. Skaters will be on the ice for the majority of the game, and sit on the bench only as long as theyre willing, as a simple button press overrides the coach and puts them back on the ice. The core elements remain that made the mode a hit in the past. There is a basic story element to help player progression, and the leveling mechanics are complete and function well, however the overall experience lacks the polish and convenience that previous iterations enjoyed from its years of progress.

With some game modes returning to their basic principles, a lot more are missing from the game entirely. EA Sports Hockey League, Online Team Play, Seasons, Playoffs, Shootouts and even the nostalgic NHL 94 mode are chief among a long list of items from previous iterations that were omitted from the feature list of the new generation title at launch. However, this news comes paired with the announcement of several significant and complimentary game updates to be issued post-launch, specifically including the future addition of Online Team Play and even updates to the previously mentioned modes to address the concerns of missing functionality.
