My friend recently build his first pc but it doesn't boot up at all, none of the fans spin but the led on the motherboard comes on. We have reset the CMOS and tried booting it up without the GPU and no ram. All help is appreciated.

I have had this problem before.
Nothing but a little green light on the motherboard.
Problem is: The power supply.

Check the SATA cables, sometimes when you move your case they come loose and your computer can't find a boot drive... Either that or it is the Power Supply.

The PC won't boot without ram and if you do it without the GPU, make sure you put your monitor cable into the integrated graphics port on the mobo

Do a run down of the PC, make sure that everything is in properly.

Most people don't install the dam correctly so be firm with it, you won't break it

If no fans spin but an LED is on check your 20+4 Pin power connector and your 4/8 Pin CPU power are in firmly and well down.

Chances are these are not in correctly and the PC is not getting enough power.

Did you use motherboard standoffs or just screw the board down to the tray? I've seen this have the effect you're describing. I've also seen people completely forget about the CPU power or EPS connector.

If your motherboard came with a speaker, you can connect it and see what beep error code it throws. We can also check your cables if you post a picture of the inside.
