im thinking about buying a 3ds xl and pokemon x do i need to buy anything else for pokemon or do i just need the system and game

All you need is the 3DS and Pokemon X/Y to play. If you want to play your 3DS online, I believe you just connect to your WiFi like you would on any other device and you're connected online. I think you need people's friend codes to battle them online, so if you're planning to play online, that will be needed as well, unless you can just find random battles online (have yet to play X/Y, but it's pretty much the same as the DS Lite when it comes to playing the actual game.)
