It might not change your mind, but I wish to take the liberty to tell you that Windows 8 is awful and impossible to navigate. If you wish to make your computer into having a very 'phone-like' GUI, then definitely go ahead. You can pirate it, but we cannot post those types of links here, so you'll have to Google it.

Installing Windows 8 in now way upgrades your hardware. I don't understand why you'd think it would? Thereis no way to keep all your content when you do a fresh install, unless you back everything up to an external HDD. When you install Windows, you need to format your drive which deletes everything. You don't have to pay for Win8, you can get it for free easily. Just use Google and YouTube.

It's always better to install a fresh copy rather than upgrade.
A decent user it should about 40 mins to figure how to use Win 8.

I would personally stick with win7 although you could put the old files you want on a portable harddrive then transfer them over to the hard drive with win8 on it once installed.

When you install windows 8 make sure to click the "Upgrade" Option as that will Keep everything you have and put in a folder called, windows.old. You will have to reinstal everything again, but its there

Windows 8.1 + openshell = windows 7 but faster.

Adapt, it'll take you half an hour.
