If they told you, wouldn't you think everyone would start doing it?

There are certain promotions that people just stock up on codes or they just collect them and sell them.

I guess that makes sense. I just was wondering how they are so much cheaper.

Well most eBay sellers get their codes from

They purchase them in bulks. Just to inform you, they're quite cheap and fair. It isn't the price a code times the quantity, just a discount lol.

I work at speedway, so I get discounts by buying in bulk, overall, I get about 40% off by buying whole packs of 50 at a time

Promotional codes, add like a years worth to your account. Ring Microsoft and tell them you don't want XBL anymore but you want to be reimbursed in a code for the amount of XBL gold you have left. They will then email you the code. -- That's one long way of changing promotional code exploit into 1,3,12m/o codes.

Or you can jack peoples accounts, use the CC on their account to buy XBL gold, repeat the steps in the paragraph above and grab yourself some 'free' gold. Although that's most likely 99.9% fraud... If you get caught. heh. The great thing about this method is that most people will realize a transaction has gone to M$ and will dispute it with their bank and get their money back anyway!

So you're technically only screwing Microsoft and causing a slight inconvenience for the person account you took.

Ofc i don't condone this type of behavior. I type this for educational purposes ada)
