Some analysis from the BBC website:

A defence expert has told the BBC that shooting down a plane at 10,000m (9.7 miles) would have required a long- range surface-to-air missile - possibly guided by radar.

That suggests it is unlikely it could have been downed by a portable air defence missile, or Manpad, which has a much shorter range.

The only other possibility is for an aircraft at that height to be downed by a fighter carrying air-to-air missiles.

The US will have access to satellite imagery that should be able to identify ultra-violet plumes if a long-range surface-to-air missile was fired.

6:20 GMT: Ukrainian president, Petro Poroshenko, has rejected any involvement of the Ukrainian armed forces in the crash of the Malaysian jet, Interfax news agency reports.

Don't know if this is true or not, obviously.

Yeah i don't think the Ukrainian army would have shot it down, it has mainly been the russians shooting down aircraft in recent weeks

I was literally JUST watching this on the news in there with my dad.

Sad news to all the people that had family on board. Good article though.

It's really not, bad luck if anything and seeing as they can't tell what company owns the planes from the ground (yes I'm implying they got shot, just seems like the most reasonable answer to this) it could have been any plane that got shot.

Russian Military also shot down a Ukrainian Fighter Jet, but it could be connected to the Malaysian Airlines MH370 Disappearance, its just really wierd...

Just heard about this now.
Another tragedy with Malaysian Airlines too. Horrible.

There are large rumours about the plane being shot down though, and apparently Russia had been seen with a surface to air missile yesterday:

Journalists in region say they saw a Buk-type launcher in pro-Russian rebel hands yesterday
