Hey,

For my IT coursework I have to record myself cleaning a computer system safely. I built my computer about 6 months ago, so it's about time I popped the side off and removed the dust build up. I've heard that using a standard household vacuum cleaner isn't safe as it creates static within the case - which could damage/kill components on the motherboard and GPU.

So I've been looking at some compressed air cans, which I am considering buying to blast the dust out of the case (i'll be doing this outdoors). If you've done this before, could you suggest any safety precautions or tips on how to clean effectively? If I use compressed air, would one 400ml can be enough for one clean?

I'm also wondering if there's alternative methods of removing dust, or if this is the only effective way of doing so.

Thanks in advance!

For my IT coursework, I assume you're doing Level 3 IT and Unit 2 I believe we just had to get some screen wipes, wipe the screen and keyboard. As long as your teacher is observing it should be fine.

Yes, I'm doing that exact course and unit! 1234((

For some reason he specified in class that he actually wants us to clean the dust from a PC though.. I guess i'll just go ahead and order the compressed air. I'll also clean the display/keyboard as you say. Thanks.

Ah ok, doesn't your teacher have to observe aswell? or do you record it as evidence?

I'm not sure, it may differ between colleges, but I think we record or photograph it as evidence. He may observe for this task, but I've recorded most of the other tasks such as updating/running anti-virus software and defragmenting the hard drive.

Oh we haven't done unit 29 yet lmao. But yeah we just had to get our teacher to observe. It does differ between sixth form and colleges I guess

Make sure it's plugged in to the wall but off so it is grounded. Touch the case and don't do it on carpet. It's summer and relative humidity is high, so I doubt you could kill anything if you tried. I use an air compressor to get rid of dust, but make sure you aren't spraying water because of condensation in the tank.

I wouldn't have any qualms about using a vacuum cleaner, but if it's for an assignment and people are being picky, I would not. You should also make sure you don't let any fans spin while they are connected because they will act as generators.

Use a air compressor to get into those hard to reach areas where dust can build up.

Use compressed air in light bursts don't hold down, although they say it cant damage components don't hold too close.I've broke xbox doing that before YOu can remove power supply cards etc before cleaning so your not just spraying into PC.
