ok so heres the deal, i recently found a 500 gig hdd in my dads old computer which he doesnt use anymore. its not small enough to fit in the slim hdd bay and i have taken apart a phat hard drive and i have the "adapter", now i have seen stuff about flashing the hdd so it will work in an xbox but since its my rgh im going to use it with i dont see why i would need to flash it, also i believe xboxs only support hard drives up to 320 gigs but again its my rgh do im pretty sure that doesnt matter, and it can fit in the hdd bay of a slim, since i have a phat xbox as well(soon to be sent in)i can actually use the old piece from the hdd to connect the hdd. im not sure why the hard drive wont work, it seens like it needs more power then the consoles provide, so im wondering if any of you could tell me how to get it to work if its even possible.
pic of the hdd and phat xbox hdd "adapter", the pic kind of makes the hdd look like a laptop size hdd but its not, its this [ Register or Signin to view external links. ]

I'm starting to believe this thing might need more power since it is desktop hard drive. Worst case I just hold onto it until I get a desktop.

Sorry, but I think the drive would have to be model-specific for you to be able to flash a security sector on there. Why do you want to flash it anyways? Can't you just format the drive to FAT32 and still use it for games and stuff? BTW, to fix the problem with the size, just buy this extension. That phat thing you have will only work for phats, lol.

That should be the correct size. Check to make sure as IDK what you drive specs are.

You have to format it to FAT32 on your PC since it won't show up. It's probably already formatted to FAT32. The only things you are going to be able to view it on is XEXMenu, FSD, Dashlaunch, Neighborhood, etc. Basically any homebrew, but you won't see it on the stock MS dash. And it would be cool if you could find one, but they're not very common.

Alright, if you are planning on using this in an RGH'd console you can ignore anyone who said anything about flashing a security sector or limitations of 320gb. With an RGH'd or JTAG'd console those limitations are not there. I install 1TB drives into RGH's I do all the time.

Assuming that the drive is not bad, you are dead on about it requiring more power than what is being provided. 360's were built to power 2.5" drives, not 3.5". You really have two options:

1) Get an external USB enclosure for the drive and just use it via USB.
2) Supply additional power to the drive by using an external power supply. You could use an external molex power supply, and then a molex -> sata power adapter like these:

thank you dude, the only reason i mentioned the flashing thing was because i briefly saw it while trying to do some research for the drive. and i figured the size wasnt a problem because as you stated people use 1 TB hdds all the time on the rgh/jtag

I don't think that will work. I have a 500gb HDD also I tried using it in my slim. I was only able to use 30gb of it event though I formatted the whole thing to FAT32 it detected it as a USB I plugged it into the HDD slot still didn't work. I also used that same cord as you with a SATA to USB which I had no luck with. So I just used it in my RGH and bought a HDD for my slim so yeah.
