Birmingham Muslim MP Khalid Mahmood says city schools are being targeted by Islamic fundamentalists

Birmingham Mail wrote A Birmingham MP has claimed hard-line Muslims are trying to indoctrinate pupils at some inner-city schools.

Perry Barr MP Khalid Mahmood spoke after new claims emerged that up to twelve schools are being looked at by the Department for Education and Ofsted.

Allegations of an organised plot by fundamentalists to take over secular schools, dubbed operation Trojan Horse, are currently under investigation by Birmingham City Council.

A supposed leaked document outlined an alleged campaign to use dirty tricks to sideline non-Muslim headteachers and staff, replacing them with staff sympathetic to the hard-line view.

Mr Mahmood told the Mail said he wanted a thorough investigation and claimed people running some city schools were Salafis - hard-line Muslims - who may be trying to import their views into classrooms and the day to day running of the school.

But the majority of kids are Sunni mainstream Muslims, he added. It is an attempt at indoctrination.

Park View Academy, in Alum Rock, was among schools named in the document and has faced two Ofsted inspections this month. It is thought that Anderton Park and Oldknow Primary are also among those under investigation.

The Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove is also taking a direct interest in the situation.

He recently called Birmingham City Council leader Sir Albert Bore to a meeting and told him to get to the bottom of the issue.

Mr Mahmood, who chairs the Tackling Terrorism All-Party Parliamentary Group, welcomed the intervention of Ofsted and the investigations and said that if the allegations stack up then decisive action should be taken.

These are state schools, not Islamic. I am very concerned at the way non-Muslim staff have been dealt with and the effect on the children, he said.

And he claimed education chiefs may have previously steered clear of getting involved in schools disputes.

Council officers were in a difficult position where they either went along with it or were portrayed as anti-Islamic, he claimed.

The city council received the Trojan Horse document in December and continues to investigate. It remains unclear if the papers are genuine or an elaborate fake.

West Midlands Police is not investigating the alleged plot but has reopened a fraud investigation at Adderley Primary School after the document came to light.

The problem with this is, anyone who stands up against this is automatically going to be labelled as an Islamaphobe or a racist by the Muslim community.

Just because they believe in something doesn't mean that everybody else has to.
Religion should be a private affair, an individual relationship between one human being, and their God.
That should be the end of it.
But no, there's fundamentalists who think that everybody else in the entire world needs to follow their beliefs, so you have stuff like this happening.

Women being refused life saving abortions, people picketing the funerals of dead soldiers, people flying planes into buildings and blowing up busy town centres full of innocent people.
Religious fundamentalism is the most disgusting thing on our planet.
If people could just look at another person and say, 'OK, they don't follow my belief, that's their choice and it doesn't affect me.' I can't even imagine how much better the world would be.

If they don't like how this country is turning out, they can leave and go back to the Middle East where things are so much better.
