The inventor of the Kalashnikov assault rifle, Mikhail Kalashnikov, has died aged 94, Russian TV reports.

The automatic rifle he designed became one of the world's most familiar and widely used weapons.

Its comparative simplicity made it cheap to manufacture, as well as reliable and easy to maintain.

Although honoured by the state, Kalashnikov made little money from his gun. He once said he would have been better off designing a lawn mower.

"He once said he would have been better off designing a lawn mower."

A lot of the world would probably have been better off if he'd done that too...

Not exactly.
He said he is proud of his invention but he is sad it is used by terrorist.
He then said he wishes he could have invented a machine to help the working man, "like a lawn mower".

Actual quote -
"I'm proud of my invention, but I'm sad that it is used by terrorists ... I would prefer to have invented a machine that people could use and that would help farmers with their work for example a lawn mower."

Normally I have little respect for modern day weapon inventors (having refused to go down that path himself). But Mikhail lived in a time before Russia had the atomic bomb, and even when it did invasion still seemed a real possibility. Therefore I can understand & respect what he did. Despite the AK47 being a weapon both Russia and the U.S would be better of without existing. Still... Had he not invented it, someone else would have only years later (especially with it being based on existing technology).

Well he invented a great weapon, which had its good and bad sides but he definitely made an impact.

I agree too, it was revolutionary. In the end it fell in the wrong hands.

Mikhail Kalashnikov, the designer of the assault rifle that has killed more people than any other firearm in the world, has died aged 94, Russian officials said.

Kalashnikov, who was in his 20s when he created the AK-47 just after the second world war, died in his home city of Izhevsk near the Ural mountains, where his gun is still made, a spokesman for the Udmurtia province's president said on state television. The spokesman did not give the cause of death.

Kalashnikov was fitted with a pacemaker at a Moscow hospital in June and had been in hospital in Izhevsk since 17 November, state media reported.

The AK-47, which rarely jams even in adverse conditions, went into service in the Soviet armed forces in 1949. Today, Kalashnikov rifles are still a mainstay of Russia's armed forces and police. Known as the weapon of choice for guerrillas, the gun and its imitations have been used in conflicts around the world for decades.

At a lavish Kremlin ceremony on Kalashnikov's 90th birthday, then-president Dmitry Medvedev bestowed on him the highest state honour the Hero of Russia gold star medal and lauded him for creating "the national brand every Russian is proud of".

Kalashnikov, a son of Siberian peasants who never finished school, said pride in his iconic invention was mixed with the pain of seeing it used by criminals and child soldiers.

I assume his family will be receiving royalties from its use in Call of Duty...
