It was over a year ago that we heard rumors that Fallout 4 would be set in Boston. Of course, at that time, even the very existence of Fallout 4 wasnt confirmed, nonetheless where it would be located. But wonder no more, because not only is Fallout 4 real, but it is, indeed, set in Massachusetts.

Word comes by way of Kotaku, which acquired leaked documents associated with the games voice acting casting call. Interestingly, the documents reference a project code-named Institute; the word Fallout never actually makes an appearance anywhere. But the contents of the documents make it quite clear what game is being referenced.

For instance, the beginning of one page starts with War. War never changes, perhaps the single most well-known line in the Fallout series. It discusses the main characters great great-grandfather, who served in the army in 1945. Expecting that the bombs that ended World War II would be a harbinger of absolute atomic warfare, the narrator expresses surprise that it took until the 21st century for the world to end in nuclear fire.

Another document makes reference to the Commonwealth Minutemen. In Fallout lore, the Commonwealth is the post-apocalyptic name of Massachusetts (and perhaps the greater New England) area. You can find the full details of the leaked documents on Kotaku.

After a couple of years of rumors, including a reference from a voice actor earlier in 2013, a trademark for Fallout 4 in Europe, and even a website that ended up being a hoax, its awesome to know that Fallout 4 is, indeed, quite real.

Whos developing it, of course, is another question. Bethesda owns the Fallout name, so we know whos publishing it, and chances are that Fallout 3 developer Bethesda Game Studios best-known for The Elder Scrolls series is the obvious candidate. Nonetheless, weve reached out to Bethesdsa for comment, and will update when we hear back.

I live in Boston and there is a minute man high/college in Lexington which isn't too far out of Boston but a perfect place in the woods. Do you think they might have uses of this place as a secret base such as the citadel? Also if it is referred as the commonwealth minute man I think the commonwealth is controlled by a faction almost as the enclave but they are called minute men because during the revolutionary war minute men were militia soldiers. Any thoughts on new factions or locations too?

This is awesome! I was just reading what everything was said on kotaku and I think this will be the time 2000's to 2020 and during the vaults being built! Before fallout 3 and new Vegas times! 21st century! Just my guess.

I'm not sure if this is legit. But I really hope it is.

It's been awhile since a Fallout game, and I absolutely loved Fallout 3!

We can only hope!

Could be Bethesda releasing docs when the hoax ended just to make people not get disappointed(:
