External Hard Drives work exactly the same as internet hard drives, they just make it portable and with easy connectivity. I recommend buying a 10-20GB Flash Drive to transfer content between your computer and school computers, if you need space get another hard drive installed into your computer, I don't recommend taking an external hard drive around everywhere. With this said, no you don't have to install the programs over again when you run them off of your external hard drive. Think about how internal hard drives are installed, now just put that on the outside with a different connection cord.

I have 1tb for my Jtag. I didnt read your post so idk what your plans are. But i suggest, that if you plan on downloading alot of games or movies, the 1tb. I have doubles of all the games I have along with a non modded copy of every game (just for testing purpouses and backup reasons) and i also have almost 400gb of movies and around 10gb of music, along with 10gb specifically for my xbox saves exc. Works perfectaly fine and i still have enough room for more games if i please. i have around 200gb free but i cycle through movies like a mad man.
Hope I helped your decision,
Snowman
