It is a Light Machine Gun. It can have a grenade launcher on it.

It's a hip-fire only LMG with a grenade launcher I believe.

It is a type of SAW- Squad Automatic Weapon. Used by the conventional American military in the form of an M249B (infantry squad). It uses a belt fed (chain) bullet feeding system. I assume that IW just made a generic version of the MG for this game, since they didn't want to use the M249 designation.
