If you have another computer, you can burn a iso of windows(legal) or make a boot-able usb., It will not be activated though. But you can use it, and you can download activator. It is what i am currently using and have not had any problems.

Linux.. Hahahahaha LOL, no don't get that

What's wrong with GNU/Linux? It's only broken if you want it to be and if you're not gaming, I'd say it's a better option. I still don't believe that Windows in its current state is good for most computer users because for people that don't know what they're doing, it's so easy to screw up. Manufacturer crapware doesn't help, either. If I was buying my grandmother or a 10-year old a computer today, it would have Ubuntu, Mint, Mac OS X, or MAYBE Elementary OS. Locked-down GNU/Linux operating systems are ideal for people who don't know what they're doing or want something simple.

OP, you can install Windows for free by downloading the disk image that has been posted, creating a bootable flash drive (using WinToFlash) or DVD (using ImgBurn), and using the trial feature of Windows. You can reset the trial three times for a total of 120 days of free usage. The command to re-arm Windows, which resets the trial, is "slmgr -rearm". After the trial periods have expired, you'll need to activate Windows with a key.

If you're in school and can provide a valid email, (@(schoolname).edu), I think there is somewhere you can go to obtain a genuine product key for free. That's how I got a product key for both x64 and x86 Windows 7 Pro, as well as Windows 8 Pro, (even though the OS is terrible and I'll never install it..). If not, besides what's already been posted there are no other legal routes to take to get a free copy of Windows 7.

This only works for schools enrolled in Microsoft Dreamspark's premium membership. You still can get windows 8 cheaper if you are a student nonetheless.
